Potteries town ? Since when was Stafford a Potteries town ... :urgh:
I believe there was a small pottery 'industry' several centuries ago; I think some evidence was dug up during the digs at the Castle.

I also think at one time the Wedgwood factory sat within the Borough, until the line was redrawn, so that Wedgwood could take advantage of EU funding that was made available to depressed areas, i.e. Stoke.

And today we have https://carolegloverpottery.co.uk/shop

Wedgwood's move from Etruria to Barlaston was planned in 1936 with the factory built in 1938 to 1940 and so well before any thoughts of EU funding. And from Stoke TO Stafford Borough would have been in the wrong direction.

It was nothing to do with their move from Etruria.

When they originally moved to 'Barlaston', the main factory was just inside the Stafford Borough boundary. When EU subsidies became available for Stoke, a deal was done to redraw the boundary line around the southern side of the main building (effectively moving them into Stoke), so they could apply for the EU funding. This happened in 1997.

The change is referenced in Barlaston Parish Council's records, as it impacted on their boundary as well, which states "The parish covers 1200 hectares of largely rural land, much of it forming part of the North Staffordshire Green Belt. Boundary changes in 1997 resulted in the transfer of the Wedgwood factory and grounds to the newly established Stoke on Trent Unitary Authority."

Thanks for correcting me.
Barlaston is clearly shown within Stafford Borough Council's territory on their website but the factory is of course half a mile further north.

I don't think many people realised that the Wedgwood factory was within Stafford Borough until 1997 and this subtle boundary change was barely mentioned in the media.

I think it's more like a mile.

I only mention this because this was part of my exercise route whilst recovering from a broken hip.

The route obviously included "emergency" resting places such as the Plume and Duke of York as well as a bus to take me back up the hill when necessary 🤣

It was always half a mile between the two stations on the railway timetable but, yes, between either pub and the middle of the factory via the towpath is just about a mile.

It's actually 44 chains by rail so more or less smack bang between our distances assuming distance of a chain doesn't change once it goes into the Stoke boundary 🤣

Your more detailed information makes all the difference.
I just know that in my old railway timetables Barlaston was 39¾ miles and Wedgwood was 40¼ miles from Birmingham New Street while Wedgwood was 41¾ miles and Barlason was 42¼ miles from Manchester Piccadilly.

Sorry, don't agree. I worked in the Potteries for a while. I can't see anything of Stafford in those towns.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Listening to Sunak's key note speech on PM on the way home. What effing planet is this guy on. I actually found myself gripping the steering wheel really hard and starting to drive aggressively* he would me up so much.

*I never drive aggressively on the road!

How do people who voted Conservative resolve their choices with their conscious?

Serious question
