Nostalgia - What are your memories of Stafford?

Sheridan was invited to stay at Chetwynd House, by invite of the owner William Chetwynd, when visiting Stafford as our MP. Stafford was a notorious Rotten Borough at the time, so Sheridan's tenure was almost certainly 'bought'. There is one theory that Tipping Street gets its name from being the part of town where local 'candidates' put themselves up for bidding - 'tipping' the electorate with cash bribes for their vote.

The franchise was much shorter then.

He was the Theo of that age - she gets the far roomier Sandon Hall, of course, but the privilege is much the same. Amazingly, she manages to garner votes without even having to shell out any readies.

Even more amazingly, the franchise is much wider now.

Very true.
And Theo doesn't have to write plays to keep the wolf from the door.

Not sure if it’s the write thread but can you knowledgeable people help. I’m have a debate at work couple of us think there was a club on north walls some years ago, not the Labour club, Riley’s or Kenny’s but for the life of us can’t remember it’s name any of you know! Hopefully we’ve got the right place and not made fools of ourselves 🤣

Depending upon exactly what 'club' might mean, the 'Blind Centre' hosted meetings for a few organisations, the Gramophone Society for one.

I Remember the blind centre across the road from labour club( is blind centre and houses near to it still there now, or gone??)
Can't remember any other clubs in that area , at least from my 1973 onwards going out days.
Used to be the back entrance to the Sheridan that came out near the labour club on North walls...

That was in the Kenny's building wasn't it? I don't think it lasted very long and for some reason I never went in.

I remember it and went a few times, but it was always dodgy in there.

The last time I went a load of "imported" clubbers came down from I think Stoke to fillthe place up. never felt to uncomfortable in a club. the place was full of pill heads and really agressive people.

I later found out that on the same night, some poor lad was set upon and was beaten up so badly he was left with seveire brain damage. I dont think the club lasted much longer after that?

I would use all my weekly pocket money (4/-) supplemented by bottle returns and errand money to buy a 45 from Parkes every week (6/8p). I was restricted to 3 records to take into the booth.

Incidentally, I still have my copy of ‘Red River Rock’, but came to prefer the B side, ‘Buckeye’.
