Does anybody have a reasonably reliable date for the construction of Mill Bank Surgery?

I'm trying to arrive at a date for a photo that may have that going on in the background.

I think around 1992/93. I had the youngest in 1991, and went back a couple of years later to enquire/demand sterilisation. Dr Byrne had retired by then and Dr Davies had taken on his patients.

No doubt this had been posted before but it made me giggle...
Fascinating.
Right at the beginning is the "COACH AND HORSES / BUTLERS" sign that survived until the 1970s, and of course the Brine Baths that also survived until the 1970s.

Learned to swim there. Got me Red S.
Taught by the dreaded Duggy Owen ? :eek:
I was fished out with a hook by the dreaded Duggy Owen. :lol: Dived in for my green badge, and instead of carrying on to swim the length I ended up crawling around the bottom of the deep end trying to work out whether the side or bottom of the pool was the floor. The rest of the class were most disappointed when I was fished out alive :lol:

He didn't get fooled (and not amused) on previous lessons in the small pool around the back/side , when I was hopping along on one leg pretending to swim. God I hated school swimming lessons ! Even more so the getting changed in the cubicles at the side of the pool. The girls had to squash 2 of us into the one cubicle , and rather difficult getting dried & dressed quickly in time for the coach back . I used to forge letters from my parents with reasons as to why I couldn't go in the water that day .

I remember Duggy teaching us how to make a temporary lifebelt by taking off yer keks, tying up the bottom of the legs then flapping them about to get some air into them and pulling the legs over your head, hey presto, you have a (very leaky) lifebelt. I think this was for the Bronze Medallion or whatever.
When I went to sea a serious bit of advice I received was not to worry about swimming if you go overboard. You must perfect the ability of slow treading of water, or floating (which some can do.) Swimming is pointless in the middle of the Ogin, you need to expend the minimum amount of energy and hope the ship turns around and comes back for you.
Of course all of this is pointless if a bloody big and hungry knobby Clark* comes gliding by ... :eek: (and they're ALWAYS hungry.) 😱

* Knobby Clark = shark.

But the best lesson might be not to learn to swim because those that do are more likely to get into open water which is potentially dangerous.
