Odd things about Stafford.

And if you are from Stafford, you are likely to say buz anyway. I think I've managed to avoid that, simply because it annoys me when my Dad says it.

Interesting, maybe it depends whereabouts you grew up. Or, more likely, my Dad is just odd.

You think he's odd? We all love him!

The people of Stafford are a weird lot, no-one in Stafford seems to come from Stafford, & no-one talks to anyone....except on here...& me - I'll talk to anyone!

You're right about the talking bit I've always wondered why that is, but it is something I've often heard being said.

There are a small but very determined group of non aligned persons who very deliberately force squeeze embarrass cajole a grunt mumble hi hello from passers by in less busy passing areas of the town and country that is the Borough of Stafford

I've often heard it said, but I think it's nonsense. People in Stafford always seem friendly enough to me & are much keener for a chat than folks down south where I grew up. Admittedly they are less likely to give you an unsolicited life story than in Stoke, but I don't always feel that's a bad thing.

As for oddness, I've always found the 'orphaned' Red Lion Street, that now runs across the middle of a car park, yet still features double yellow lines to be a bit peculiar...

Did it used to be the entrance to the slaughterhouse? Now the prison?

I believe the slaughterhouse was there, but there were also house & shops as well. It's more the fact it still appears on maps in spite of being surrounded by car park that I find odd, although I suppose if the prison never took responsibility for it from the highways it might make sense.

The sign is still there.

And White Lion Street is little more than just a car park.

In my experience, it depends on the generation. I'm not quite the elder statesman, but we say omnibus.
Yes! There isn't a high street, or a bus station or a propper taxi rank... :strange:
Damn. I bought this map in good faith from a bloke in the pub. He said he needed the money for his train fare home. Right, I'm off to buy a Garmin using Stephen Fry's voice - and If I don't get discount, I'll jolly well use my own!

I suppose it's like anywhere really as soon as one person makes the effort then then others will respond and perhaps it's because not enough people make that first effort by striking up a conversation, personally I could talk a glass eye to sleep and talk to anyone when I'm out. I also notice if you have a dog that it seems to draw people in to start talking.

Sadly I think the two-front-legged dog with pushchair wheels to the rear is no longer with us......

Sorry if I alarmed anyone, the poor pooch minus a couple of legs is not 'Train Dog'....
