Organ Donation

most people don't realise just how the current system works. even if you have taken the time to sin up to the register (which thankfully is now a bit easier as it's part of a driving license application), your family still has the final say as to whether your organs can be used to (hopefully) help save or lengthen someone elses life.

However, here's a proposal from the welsh http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-15625285 this is actually something I have thought for a while should be the way it works. why do we have to go to the trouble of opting in? Most decent human beings would happily allow their organs (after they've passed away) be donated to someone less fortunate so that they can help them live their life more fully.

i fully expect everyone to disagree with me now, so don't worry

The problem is that if you can't find the information in time, you may harvest organs against someones wishes. Heaven forbid someone lives because of this, but the fact remains that your remains are to be treated how you wished.

I disagree entirely, I think it should become law that all organs are harvested at time of death, but thats just me.

i think that what they're proposing is that there would be a central register (much like the current one) but instead of saying you would like to be a donar, you're syaing that you definately wouldn't. although given how well national databases seem to work, i'm not so sure all of a sudden...

I couldn't agree more - why this isn't already the case is beyond me.

It is one of those ideas that has been around for quite a while, popping up occasionally, then disappearing with nothing having changed. It's about time someone just went ahead and did it, so good on the Welsh. Let's hope this adds up to more than just a 'consultation' and something comes of it - if it is seen to be working in Wales it will be more likely to be adopted here.

I have heard this before too.

All for it myself. I have no need for my organs when I am gone so someone else may as well have them!!

When I take over, it will be a condition of using the NHS. I may be prepared to have an interim phase where, if you're not prepared to donate organs after death or fluids whilst still alive, then you will not be eligible to receive any treatment that involves the use of such 'products'. It is utterly beyond me why so few people will join in - people are dying needlessly every day whilst we burn perfectly usable spares.

The Belgian experience. Many other countries also have presumed consent legislation.

I am with you in that my view is they are no use to me when I am gone, so take the bloomin lot if it can help anyone.

My other half however refuses to carry a donor card and its not laziness nor the alright jack syndrome.

He is a caring guy who has a bit of a death phobia and refuses to discuss anything to do with death and I think a lot of people think like this. If presumed consent was the way, I don't think he would object to it though.

If he died before me, I would have no idea what he would want me to do - though I have told him, that if he doesn't consent to my organs being used, I will come back to haunt him.

Best to be sure, though. Haunt him now!

I used to discuss this at length with my previous long term partner and I would always say anybody who voted Tory would not get a piece of me, apparently that's not possible to do.

I seem to remember a case some years ago where a family agreed to release a deceased relative's kidneys for transplant, but only on the condition that they would be used for the benefit of white English patients. There was some considerable discussion of the ethics of agreeing to this, and the consequences of disagreeing. In the end it was decided not to accept the family's offer on that basis and the kidneys went to waste. Of course, the truth was that they would probably have been used for a white English patient anyway, just by the luck of the draw, and so a potential recipient, or even two recipients, were denied the possibility of a transplant...
