Picking someone up from Manchester Airport.

Morning all.
Son needs picking up later from Manchester. I know they charge you a lot of money to park at the airport, is there a better way to pick him up maybe from a park & ride. The train option tonight is no good as he won't land in time. Any suggestions appreciated

When I've collected my wife and daughter from Ringway Airport I've stopped of at the Windmill adjacent to M6 Junction 19 and sat with a pint of Robinsons Unicorn until fifteen minutes before they're ready to be picked up.

In the past, I've watched the flight on FlightRadar24, then headed out to be in the vicinity of the airport at around the time it would really be landing - then I've waited in a lay-by* just before the A556 joins the M6, to be tipped off by phone when they were actually free to leave the scene, having got bags and passed customs and immigration.

The first time I did it, I accidentally went to the Departure Zone drop-off, which was much less chaotic than the Arrivals pick-up point, but that may not be possible now.

I also suspect that they require a payment now, even for just a simple pick-up event.

*Mmm, 'my' lay-by seems to have been removed some time ago...

Depending on the time you're collecting them there's a park and ride at Sale Water park that's free then you could either catch a tram to the Airport or the person you're collecting could come to you on the tram.

Tram is about £3.00 each for a day ticket or probably cheaper if you tap on and tap off each journey.

If you get the timing right I would cough up the £6 for 30mins. Wait and grab a coffee at the garage just off junction 19, once the plane has landed make your way to the airport assuming your son has hold luggage.
