Would really love to go for a nice vegan meal for my birthday on a Wednesday evening. I want to be able to order straight off a menu without having to check what's vegan and have at least 2-3 choices that aren't full of olives or mushrooms for each course. (Sorbet and fruit salad for dessert doesn't count.) It has to be somewhere I won't see or smell cooked dead animals - Pizza Express is okay in that respect, but their vegan options are limited. Does anyone know of anywhere?

The Swan has had Veggie/Vegan nights - I'm not sure how regularly they have occurred, maybe Chris Lewis might be a long in a bit...

Edit ^..or Withnail might jump the gun......

Also, based on the current menu my choices are:

STARTERS...

  • Soup (Vegan)

Homemade soup of the day finished with crunchy croutons
  • Swan Meze (vegan)

Kalamata olive tapenade, red pepper harrissa dip, hummus, wholemeal pitta bread
Neither are particularly imaginative. The soup is a possibility as long as it isn't mushroom, the meze is a possibility but I will be unable to eat one of the three dips. So in total that's 1 and a bit choices.
MAIN COURSE...

  • Tofu Kebabs (Vegan)

Thai marinated tofu kebabs, udon noodles, ginger, carrot, coriander, sweet chilli dressing
It's not something I would normally choose, so just under 1 choice.
DESSERT...

  • Sorbet (Vegan)

    Selection of sorbets
  • Melon (Vegan)

Melon soaked in Pimms, topped with mint granita
Just LOL... But well done on having more than one flavour.

(I do not consume alcohol either.)

Also I believe people can still order non-veg dishes from the main menu.

If The Swan is serious about Vegetarian & Vegan food, I suggest the following:

1. Drinks List (including soft drinks and cordials) indicating whether they are vegan, vegetarian or neither.
2. Make Tuesday nights exclusively vegetarian and vegan food.
3. Get more experimental! I recommend you visit Bistro 1847 (they are in Birmingham and Manchester), at the very least, for inspiration.

There are vegan versions or alternatives to just about any food you can imagine.

Just LOL...

Well in that case one can only suggest you call in to Raas Leela.

Judging from the name/menu posted up some moments ago, it sounds like it is actually Indian. Might be worth asking them what they can do for you?

Then you can let us all know what it's like. :)

I like Indian food but sometimes I just want to go to a restaurant and have a variety of dishes to choose from so I don't have to decide in advance what kind of cuisine I will feel like on the day. It gets somewhat tedious having to rely on Asian restaurants to have a decent vegan dining experience.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I think you would prefer is, a restaurant that has never had meat anywhere on its premises? So there is zero chance of your meal being 'contaminated' in any way by a dead animal. Is that right?

Would that be the Birmingham with the population of 1,o85,400? Or the Manchester with the population of a much more vague 2.5 million? Or both?

Or perhaps the slightly less than 65,000 people who allegedly reside in the Boro?

Perspective is all.

1. Good point, very useful.
2. Commercial suicide.
3. If more vegans show up each it's a possibility but experimental by its very nature excludes. Many are not risk takers and dishes that are different can put people off without the safety net of some old favourites, and as withnail alludes to Stafford has a small pool of potential customers.

2. In your extremely biased opinion.
3. Every single vegan dish on the menu I posted was fairly predictable - albeit some had a mildly interesting twist. Not everyone likes to eat the same food over and over again, particularly vegans who usually have very little choice when eating out in Stafford.

Pianta at Pizza Express; Freedom Salad at Wetherspoons - it's not farking chips or plain salad or jacket potato or baked beans or the same one curry that's been on the menu forever.

In view of your requirements I can't honestly think of anywhere better than a visit to Birmingham, which is a shame. However it's only a cheap return ticket away and most of the decent eateries are with walking (or bus distance if you don't like the idea of walking round Brum at night).

Bistro 1847 is only a 10 minute walk from New Street Station and I'd say well worth the extra the train will cost you.

It's always going to be the case that large cities will offer a wider choice of eateries that little towns like Stafford I'm afraid.
