Good night rather bright warm morning.

Spent afternoon talking to a couple of Canadians in a farmhouse, who belong to the “M.T” attached to the Canadian cavalry brigade at present with our army (the 4th).

Wrote letter to my wife and my friend Ope Day.

Official reports are slightly more favourable this evening, it appears that only our 4th and the 6th French army are carrying out the present offensive.

French 6th army report at 7.10 pm “French line and of Somme aaa, point 6000 all mereancourd wood 6486 tr riensi aaa inf progressing in Herbecourt beyond church aaa point 39 42 tr Brunechilde aaa Fighting in progress in Addevillers aaa Battery of 105 taken at point 6486 aaa 20th corps report fighting I B du chaputre this unconfirmed”.

Our 13th own reports considerable movements of vehicles from Contal-Maison in a N.E. direction.

Our 3rd corps reports that the 19th own states we have captured La Boisselle and German front and support trenches to the S.E enemy putting up stout fight by bombing.

It is to early to judge of general results but personally I should say that under the circumstances and in view of the fact that the Germans had little or no reserves at the commencement that on the whole our advance has been a failure up to the present.

Our 8th corps has been checked and driven back and our losses elsewhere appear to be very great, we have obtained no substantial decisive result at any point.

Our artillery continues to hammer and grind away day and night. I hope it is to some purpose wish I could bring myself to cultivate a little faith in British advances, but unfortunately it is impossible.

Our army is controlled and led by a horde of amateur officers whose one and only characteristic and relieving feature that they all know how to die.

That is not war however, neither does it bring victory and we are losing this war for the one sole reason, which is obvious that we lack purpose, initiative, one point at which I aim, a bold head and a strong hand.

Where is the soldier who could and would put all these specific requirements into effect?
