Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
There can be all sorts of reasons why a person wants to claim asylum in the UK. They may have relatives already living here or maybe they can speak English rather than French, German, Italian etc. Maybe they studied here. You never know.

They aren't physically forced though are they. They have made the choice to come to the UK, instead of stopping in one of the many countries they have passed through.
So you do t think the uk should ever take in asylum seekers, based purely on its location?

An alternative view is if the uk allowed them to fly here to claim asylum they wouldn't have needed to travel through the other countries? Or if we allowed them to claim remotely?

We put in place the rules that make them come here before claiming, then blame them for coming here and claiming.

In the current system, which is international law, there is no obligation on them to remain in any of those countries or claim asylum there.

There might very well be an argument that that’s what should happen, but given most of the places these people are displaced from border ‘safe’, but incredibly poor countries it’s not exactly a recipe for success and not one the likes of Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Tunisia etc are going to be keen on.

Had the NIMBY Pearl clutching sheet of A4 through at some point this week, apparently all 400 odd asylum seekers will be single males and they’ll all be following young girls home at night! Come off it.

Didn’t feel the need to sign their name though, so clearly whoever is circulating the bit of paper doesn’t want to associate themselves with their own opinions

My answer to this remains that the students were all young single males too, so where exactly is the problem? Then sit back and watch the I'm not racist but... verbal diarrhoea ensue.

These are the sort of people who go abroad and complain the hotel staff don't speak good enough English.

I don't think I was a young single male when I was there....neither was @Wormella and many many more of us!

I'm talking 1998 onwards, definatly more females..but the students weren't living on £5.00 a day, with no other income available to them and time to do whatever they want, no employment, no entertainment.....just look at the placesin stoke, see how crime rises.....doesn't effect me...so live and let live.

So maybe allowing them to do something might help? Making them sit in a hotel for 18 months only to accept most applications anyway seems a little odd?

Which place in stoke is this? Someone mentioned one on FB earlier but ignored any questions about the crime figures

When I was there stafford campus was 95% male, maybe it got better?

Edit: my course had over 300 men and 6 women!

As someone who graduated in 2016… the Octagon was definitely about 90% male. Beacon Building was better though, the games design courses especially were a lot more diverse than computing.

I graduated in 99, but tbh was hardly there after 97 due to my year out and then not wanting to do my final year so found every excuse to be elsewhere!

No, I was not - I've often thought it was a little bit of a shame I always had a boyfriend from back home when I lived in halls, there would have been fun to be had... Our flat of 6 had four girls in it but I was the only girl on my course.

I don't remember there being any issues with the students and the locals, just complaints about the speed of the internet

This is all being set up to fail, so the system is easily broken and so, in turn, is the country.
Let's all play a game of "which country can go bankrupt, first?"
This shower are breaking as much as possible in turn to blame the next incumbents for many years to come, as they pick up the unrecoverable mess that is created. What's known as the 80 year cycle isn't due to end until 2028 so we have more downturn to come, yet.
So, where do all these people go that were meant to be using hotels, old peoples homes etc etc, while all this goes on? It just stops or everybody has to live even more differently.

They had mixed flats then? And yeah, speed of the internet was a problem even when I was there, they did eventually “fix” it to a certain degree but it was still hella slow.

Pretty much, they’re taking all the copper out before they leave.

I don’t think many hotels actually meet even half capacity most of the time though, and Serco certainly aren’t going to be paying for “good” hotels.

It’s all f###ed up and none of us really know the true picture, was my main point for posting this as the info was taking from the “service provider” documentation.
And yet you prefaced it with -
The way this is being done is quite alarming
- and linked to a video that was presumably intended to demonstrate that.

And instead of being illuminating in any way to that point, it was just some dreary bloke reading off a list of areas of the UK and saying 'god knows' what is true. Ultimately all it really revealed was that Serco appear to be struggling to find accommodation for a few thousand people in the face of a detention centre being closed, and looking for private rentals to plug the gap.

And now you are saying 'it' is all fubared and 'none' of us really know anything. Which is your 'main' point.

I don't think i'm being entirely unreasonable when i suggest you are not bringing much of value to the proverbial table.

The wider point, as far as i am concerned, is that if that kind of content is feeding your, of late, rather outré offerings to this esteemed forum, you really should take a look at your bedfellows. You have taken a wrong turn, and one can only hope it's not too late.
