i'm sure he was doing pretty well out of it, but i'd be surprised if it was anywhere near that!
Whilst I understand your scepticism, I doubt it would be presented to a jury if it were not true and with records to back it up

"The jury was told that police found almost US $300,000 (£183,580) in Mr Ellis's Paypal account and that he received $18,000 (£11,000) a month in donations from people using his website."

@ Wookie...

I know what you are saying, like when FACT say "last year piracy cost the music industry £1,000,000,000" (or something along those lines) and the way they work it out is x number of albums downloaded multiplied by £x = the total figure.

Obviously that assumes everyone who downloaded would have purchased anyway... quite often a friends ;) brother asks him to download the Top 40 albums and stick them on a dvd for him... no way that friends brother would have bought all 40 if he had to pay for them, probably not even 4 or 5 of them...

However FACT quoting figures and a prosecution in court using them are two completely different things IMHO.... if prosecution in court didn't have proof to back their claims up, the defence barrister would have made mincemeat of them.

Quite so. However, were they paying or donating, ie compulsory or voluntary? And was Oink set up for illegal file trading, or is Mr Ellis merely guilty of not censoring what people were posting on his site?
Granted, any half-decent defence lawyer would have been able to blow holes in any skulduggery with the numbers without even standing up. :)

Music industry owes between $50,000,000 and $6,000,000,000 to artists.
"Essentially, record companies no longer had to get a compulsory license every time they wanted to use a song for, say, a compilation album. Instead, they went ahead and used the song without waiting for authorization or making payment, adding the song to a list of music that is pending authorization and payment. If you're questioning whether you read that right, that basically means the record industries could use songs as long as they pinky swore they would get authorization and pay the artist for it eventually."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/oct/28/mandelson-date-blocking-filesharers-connections

'Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, warned internet users today that the days of "consequence-free" illegal filesharing are over as he unveiled the government's plan for cracking down on online piracy.

Mandelson, speaking at the government's digital creative industries conference, C&binet, confirmed that the internet connections of persistent offenders could be blocked - but only as a last resort from the summer of 2011.'

So we have until 2011 to get a better way of filesharing? Oh, hang on, they wont be in power anymore so its irrelevant what laws an unnelected member of parliment tries to bring in. I'm still intent on visiting Mandys home with a laptop and sitting outside til I can DL some goat pr0n over his wireless. Then selling the story to the NOTW or someone about how he's a secret goat lover. He must be, its his connection.....

There's an excellent quote about him in the current Colemanballs.

Always thought thats how the people in power got there, figured you have to do something pretty low to get on the expenses gravy train otherwise intelligent people could get in. Just saw this, possibly a way to get you to open your SSL connection to a newsgroup server for scrutiny?

UK jails schizophrenic for refusal to decrypt files

The first person jailed under draconian UK police powers that Ministers said were vital to battle terrorism and serious crime has been identified by The Register as a schizophrenic science hobbyist with no previous criminal record.

His crime was a persistent refusal to give counter-terrorism police the keys to decrypt his computer files.
The guy has now been sectioned before the end of his prison term, so has no idea of his release date, despite commiting no real crime. Yay for justice :|

Yay for justice indeed. Meanwhile no doubt a faux muslim extremist pocket (because muslim terrorists are not really muslims, are they?) have managed to produce no end of plans and explosives etc. whilst GHCQ (or whatever_ were too busy pursuing a harmless introvert.

Drug dealing is a worse crime than rape
Blowing your nose at the wheel is worse than smoking
Despite the dangers you can still drink and drive
Torture and murder of a minor earns you a new identity
Remedial, harmless hacking leads to deportation and handing over to the americans, regardless of mental handicap
Defending your person or property is basically illegal
Speaking the scientific truth about highly taxable commodities gets you sacked
Peados get released after half their prison term despite the fact you cannot rehabilitate a sexuality

Yay for justice my friend, welcome to the united f***ing kingdom of shitty britain.

Just to add, trying to help family gets you nowhere. Still ****** off that I have to support the moose, yet if I kicked him out he'd get a free flat at much higher expense to the taxpayer than him staying with me. I like living with him, don't want to kick him out, but the free flat is tempting. Could get a dozen illegal immigrants in that, gotta be worth a few quid!

Well yes this is really going to make me spend my hard earned with the music industry.

How long before something else comes along which is harder to detect by ISPs et al?

Lol BT Deleted 80% of the data.

Or perhaps they realised that the only people downloading MOS albums actually have no money and are not worth pursuing.
