Pubs from the early 1990’s

Telford

A few posts under my belt
I used to work in Stafford till the end of 1992, and drank at dinnertimes, eating a packet of extra song mints on my way back to work. Anyway, here’s my recollections:

Four Crosses – I remember when it was a Courage pub, and think it was managed by Rick (Podmore??), early 90’s?

Joiners Arms - didn’t know who the owner was, but weekday dinner times the barman was Dippy Dave, dippy because of being an dipsomaniac. Think he used to be manager of a diy shop up Wildwood, and he blamed the stress off managing that turned him to drink. In his little crew of people, was someone called Mandy, I could never work out if she was a little bit simple, certainly had a drink problem, definitely had a hard life and taken advantage off. She was very popular with the men for the price of a pint, if you follow. The Brown Brothers used to drink in there, two big guys who were brickies I think.

Dippy and Mandy also used to drink in the Kings Arms in Peel Terrace, when the landlord was Taffy (Keith Twemlow??), who used to open up at 10am, for those with a need to drink early in the morning. He also used to doctor a 9 gallon of Ansells hand pulled bitter with barley wine and sugar, and served it as loopy juice. Didn’t he do a midnight flit back to Cardiff, where I knew he was working on a fresh fish stall. I used to drink in there with a chap named Dave Edensor(?), used to live in Blakiston Street.

Went in The Albion (??) on the corner, although can’t remember much about it.

Drank Draught Bass in the Coach and Horses, landlord left to go to The Wayfarer, at Stone?

Carpenters Arms (?), in Browning Street, before it changed.

Bass pub that was on the Foregate opposite the hospital, next to the Kingdom Hall, think it became an Indian restaurant, can’t remember its name. Hand pulled bitter.

Shrewsbury Arms in the town, can’t remember the landlords name.

Went in Pitchers wine bar once, where I had the misfortune to meet my cousin, smoking weed. Surprised to see him in there, since he was banned from most pubs in Stafford.

Bird in Hand, where I drank Courage Directors.

Pub up by the railway station, wasn’t it a Titanic pub at one stage?

Pub up in Castletown (?), real ale pub, had a good selection of whiskeys as well

Malt & Hops, Tartan bitter. Never liked the place.

Vine Hotel, nice pint of Banks’s

Rose & Crown, steered clear, used to be a haunt of my Uncle (more of him and my cousins at some other time)

Courage pub, just passed the William Salt. Went in there a few times, can’t remember much about it.

Greyhound, nice pint of Bass

Hop Pole, only went in because one of the barmaids was a big girl…….

Princess a Royal, bitter wasn’t that nice

Cottage by the Brook, or Cottage by the Ganges, as it was known.

Pub on The Foregate, can’t remember its name, run by the Proudlocks.

Stafford Arms or The Eagle are the two pubs that were previously located near to the Railway Station.

The pubs in Castletown were my locals growing up - Castle Tavern and The Railway. The Railway is still open and I still pop in there occasionally.

My grandparents were regulars in the Castletown pubs so you've might have met them - Ian and Eileen Rennie.

It wasn’t the Eagle, as the Station was on your left hand side, and the road went to the right towards the College, there was a small road that ran parallel to the railway line. It was only 100 yards or so up the road
