A bit before we arrived in Stafford, but some forumites might recognise these old shops, and know who occupies them now.

Pictures from CCPA charity shop, which sells all sorts of this type of stuff at Beaconsfield.

We used to go to Bevans in Stone. If he didn't have it, he would get it in the next day for you. Lovely man.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Rowney's was in Mill Street in my time, and Tom Reekie was by the bridge in Bridge Street.
Whilst I remember Rowney's in Mill Street, wasn't it also in Bridge Street? I'm sure I can remember going in the to buy some headphones.

It moved to Mill Street quite late on didn't it? I'm sure it used to be where the barbers is on Bridge Street, or was that The Paperhouse?

Good Deals was the record shop in Woodings Yard in my time*, that moved to Wolverhampton Road and became Collectable Records - still going, but mostly a mail order operation these days.

I do have a vague recollection of Rowney's in Bridge Street, just up from the Grapes, but for most of my time, it was at the Mill Street location.

Tom Reekie was by the bridge, where the 'amusement arcade' is now.

Paperhouse may have been in the Mini Market, next to the barber's shop - I remember it being a remarkably 'thin and long' shop.

Lotus was in Mill Street when I started frequenting it, but had been on the Salter Street/Market Street corner before, I think, then it moved to the Salter Street alley, across from where Costa is now.

* My Time = Post 1974 - but wouldn't have been heavily frequenting record shops until 1978.

In the 50's there was one in Greengate St, a few doors down (south) from the Swan Hotel. I vaguely remember buying Beatnik Fly by Johnny and the Hurricanes there.

(Yes I know, back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Heard them all before, pretty sure I'll hear them all again.) :bum:

Was it a big shop?

Those cylinders took up a lot more space than the new-fangled discs would.

Did Rowneys the record shop become Rowneys the hifi and TV shop? or did they always do both?

A few places sold both equipment and recordings - e.g., Tom Reekie, Boots and, to some extent, Woolworths.

There was a record fair today in the greyfriars vintage emporium. There are always records for sale much to my wife’s annoyance but today they had a few additional dealers in who took some money from me.

Lotus Records in Mill Street, used to stop on my way home from my Saturday job in the market. Never made it home with much money but do still have a great vinyl collection!

There was also Joe in the Market, I had a good few off him. I'm told, but I haven't verified it, that he currently works in the Sandon Road Shell garage, possibly as a lifeguard?

And Sam E for a while in the Colonnade.

And Terry Blood in the Sheridan Centre.

And the Virgin shop in Gaolgate Street.

And Andy's Records in the Guildhall.

And HMV, across from them.

Plus the charity and secondhand shops.

And, one step removed, the County Library...
