This is a disgrace and those responsible must be brought to justice. This isn't the age of the industrial revolution, we know how much trouble polluting rivers brings. Criminal proceedings and harsh sentences, please.

They're being cagey about the source so far, but few people have access to large quantities of sewage. We'll see what sort of retribution follows.

I'd say that was a pretty reserved response sofa, I was lisening to this story being reported on radio 5 this morning and cannot understand how this happened. It is absolute disgrace, you're right.

We will have to wait and see who / what is responsible and what steps will be taken to prevent this in future.

They're saying now that the cyanide inflow caused to sewage release, and that they are not identifying the cyanide source for 'legal reasons'.

Sounds about right lol. It wil have to be disclosed at some point though, surey?

Good question.

I don't know. Does anyone know the industrial processes vis-a-vis sewage treatment, where is cyanide used/produced?

How does cyanide cause a sewage leak?
I suspect that it prevents the proper functioning of the plant and the storage capacity is overwhelmed by the subsequent sewage inflow before they can restore operating conditions. They are then forced to allow some sewage to flow through. This often happens in periods of heavy rain when they can't deal with the quantities being supplied. The sewage discharge was, probably, a concious decision as a result of the cyanide contamination, rather than a leak.

I may just be making this up...

Cyanide is used in many industrial chemical processes. GEC used to have a plating shop with cyanide baths. Any spotty apprentices were sent to work in there for a time and they found that their acne would clear up quite quickly. It was also rumoured that working there would vastly reduce the number of colds and flus that you might have to suffer.

I see, so is that the secret to clearsil too?!

Does this mean that there are potentially lots of other baleful chemicals also in the water as a result of this incident do you think?

I make no recommendation in that respesct.

It seems likely that other substances might be included in the cyanide solution, particularly if it has been 'used'.

The culprit is likely to be an electroplaters

There was one at Stone who managed to pollute the Trent and Mersey a few years ago

Areva formerly GEC no longer plate on site all subcontracted

Just heard on the news....

Apparently cyanide was leaked into the drains just outside Severn Trent's processing plant. This killed the bacteria that digests the sewage meaning the the sewage was then emptied into the river...

Thats why you should never out white spirit down the drains, but I bet plenty of people do.

I find it a bit odd any sewage had to be released into the waterways. I would have imagined that treatment plants had emergeny storage areas to discharge into in situations like this. I hope they do but maybe just of not a great enough volume on this occasion.

Tuesday night was a bit wet and they can have increased in flows in those conditions. The storage capacity is finite and they, presumably, have to flush the beds through in order to repopulate them. It will be interesting to see what transpires.

As a former angler, it is particularly worrying that, after years and years of getting cleaner*, the Trent has been plunged back into serious fish deaths by irresponsibility.

I know reports have said thousands have died, but does anyone know further details on the fish deaths?

*When I was a lad(nearly 40 years ago!). The Tent was pretty deviod of any fish past Rugely. Mind you I used to live in Sheffield and the Don used to be known as the dirtiest river in Europe! and yet it is now clean enough for fish!
