This is your chance to go and see the new plans for what will go where Riverside rec centre and the old Tescos are

Trent City Securities are holding a public exhibition of their plans for the new Riverside Development. This will be at Stafford Library on Wed 9th & Thur 10th May from 11am - 4pm. There will be representatives of the company on hand to answer questions.

The development currently includes:

a leading department store
cinema complex
300-400 high class residential apartments cafes, bars & restaurants improvements to riverside views, walkways and banks of the river improved pedestrian access to the town centre

This is our chance to scrutinize the revised proposals for this site, which now includes the former Tesco store as well as the Riverside Centre.

Anyone intersted should get yourself down there and check it out - it's not exactly the longest running public exhibition!

Good knowledge Doctor. Will defo go and see what the plans are. I thought the development for the long stay car park by Sainsburys was going to have a cinema as well?

It was in those plans, which is why I had a slanging match in the Newsletter letters pages with Fraud Prickhard. He has the piece of land that the gas holder used to sit on, and paid peanuts for it. He wants to maximise his profits by building on the rest of the carpark and is promising all sorts of things, a cinema being one of them. I suspect all he wants to do is build flats and offices, probably featuring his architectural signatures of cheap cladding and neon lighting... Nice! But he's doing it all for the community and the people of Stafford. How do I know? Because that is what he keeps telling anyone who'll listen.

I actually bet him a years wages he wouldn't build half of what he's promised, and I am not sweating!

4000th post? Whatever, I'm nonchalant..
if you bet him a year's wages and win, you can hang up your helmet and retire mr seed.

Yeah, what about a nice sandy beach area with a bar made of bamboo - not so good in winter, but fabulous in the scorching summer heat!

How about they make a venue big enough to hold proper gigs in? No disrespect to the gatehouse of course, but Stafford really could do with a proper big music venue where the likes of Megadeth could play instead of playing only in Bristol, Kent, London and Scotland and making me miss out on seeing them :( Oh why couldn't they come to Stafford, hmm?

The County Showground used to host big groups.
AC/DC, Black Sabbath, KISS (supported by Bon Jovi before they went globally ballistic), Rainbow and in another vein ABBA, The Jackson 5, but this all stopped when the NEC opened.

Today's "consultation" was a rather pointless exercise. There was a man with a board who knew very little about the development and couldn't answer any detailed questions. I asked how the "comprehensive pre-application public consultation" would be carried out, all he could say was that he was around today and people from their planning development unit would be around tomorrow. He did not know if there would be an online exercise or whether the display would be taken anywhere else.

Basically the building is going to be huge, you can't tell from the plans exactly how big it but they think they can fit 300-400 apartments on the site, which will have to be above the proposed retail sites. The guy stood there said some will have to be affordable but when challenged he conceded that there was no way of keeping them affordable, although they are going to be 1 and 2 bed roomed apartments it is likely they will be snapped up to either rent out or sold on for a profit, they are no plans to help out first time buyers; such as part buy part let schemes.

The new development will completely cover the area from the civic offices up to Queensway, completely taking over Riverside and it's carpark areas. The old Tesco site has been earmarked for more retail areas, a cinema and a multi story car park. I wonder where they are going to get the business to fill the retail areas from as the guildhall and high street struggle to keep shops open for long? Perhaps they are going to rely on bars and cafes but there hasn't been any thought to the addition levels of noise, anti social behaviour, etc.

We need more information before we can make a valid decision on the plans.

Also, if it's going to be that huge, do Stafford Fire Station have their own turntable? It would be a hell of a job getting all those people from top floor apartments if a fire was to break out in one of the shops. After my son lost everything he owned to fire in a similar development I don't think I would like to live that high.

We have a Bronto Skylift, 100 ft reach, would cover most buildings in Stafford, but not quite to the top of Pennycroft or The Keep, would have no problems with the proposed 9 floors.

Mind you its off the run at the moment (broke!), and it isn't primary manned (crewed), which in short, means that it isn't always available. We have 12 bods on my watch at present when we should have 16, the reasons for this are many, and contentious, suffice to say, this situation will not be remedied in the near future.

Therefore, we have the appliance to do the job but not always the crew, so you might have to wait for an ariel from Longton or Burton...

Little bit of politics!
