Shakespeare in the Gatehouse.

'Shakespeare at the Castle' was a contractual condition that Freedom Leisure accepted when they took on the Leisure & Culture portfolio.

Any change to the status quo ante would be a breach of contract.

Any objection to the breach of contract would be reasonable.

which give no indication of where the directors live or which five of them get the "shed loads of cash", over £100,000 a year.
Well then why don't you do your own research rather than moan about the quality of other people's.

However if you think you're going to find the directors real addresses, rather than just an accommodation address then think again.

So the Ukraine war was the fault of the government was it? that's what has caused gas prices to soar. France is less affected due to having vast nuclear power generation. We instead are at the mercy of gas prices because we scrapped coal, nuclear was canned and wind farm output has been weaker despite more capacity. You need controllable generation to meet demand, wind and solar is always going to fluctuate and requires controllable generation to back it up.

What do I know eh, I only work for an energy supplier and have to know about the industry.
Hey but what does the National Grid or the French authorities know?

You're the self proclaimed expert.

That would be a fair assumption one would think.

Having said that, the Main Stage has been separate from the existing Shakespeare infrastructure for years, so could be brought back if the will is there. Ultimately it requires a fancy extension lead.

The set up for the Acoustic Stage, as was, would not be there, and recreating it for just one day might be difficult, unless it was, like, really acoustic.

Unfortunately i think it's all over.

I asked the council why this is happening and expressed my disappointment, here’s the reply;

Thank you for your email and your concerns regarding Shakespeare.

Shakespeare at the castle is the event I look forward to every year so I can agree with you, it is a fabulous setting and a champaign picnic on the day with family and friends makes it perfect.

Unfortunately we are in a position where difficult decisions have to be made of what can stay open with the budget we have, as you will of seen loss losers like: swimming pools and theatres are being closed in other areas as a way to balance budgets, I have managed to balance the budget without closing anything but things will need to change, this is not the only thing we are looking at but it is a big chunk as we have never managed to make it financially successful.

I am in discussions with Alberts Café about putting something on at the bandstand in Victoria Park so that people could come and have a picnic before the show if they so desire, and others may eat in restaurants and pubs in town helping the towns economy. It will be better for people with disabilities or the elderly, many who won’t come to the castle in case it rains, and it will be better for Freedom Leisure as they will be able to make a profit hopefully on drinks etc. at the Gatehouse.

If the market square is finished by then we could try to put some outdoor preshow on there on the sunny evenings.

This decision is made with my head not heart as it is the right thing to do in today’s climate, I am desperate not to close anything as once something closes it will never reopen. Shakespeare has run for 30 years I have been going for 25 years, it has changed dramatically over time from a small production while sitting on bales of straw, no toilets, no bar, no cover, no transport to this years with electric transport, posh toilets, everything set up to be carbon neutral - a well-stocked bar, new seating and everyone excluding the cast undercover. The cost far out ways the profit and yet I already get moaned at the price is too high.

I am truly sorry, but I know I am making the right decision for the people in Stafford as I am thinking long term not the following few years while we go through the perfect storm of energy hike, on the back of covid, I hope to get it back to the castle in the future.

Thank you once again for your concerns, but the only way to make things work at present is to back FL encourage participation and to assist them in keeping everything open.

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you would like more information.

Kindest regards

Carolyn

If it’s never turned a profit why on earth have they added electric transport and posh toilets and the nonsense that is carbon neutral (I assume they mean - paid some dubious place to offset) to the outgoing expenses?

Ah, yes,
"I am in discussions with Alberts Café about putting something on at the bandstand in Victoria Park so that people could come and have a picnic before the show if they so desire, and others may eat in restaurants and pubs in town helping the towns economy"
might be a response to my
"How about a picnic in Victoria Park beforehand ?
Or if it's raining a meal in the Bird in Hand ?"
on here a week ago.
We shouldn't underestimate the influence of this forum !

Yes, and I'm puzzled by "as you will of seen loss losers like: swimming pools and theatres are being closed in other areas as a way to balance budgets".
"Of" should be "have" but I'm not familiar with "loss losers" - our leisure centre and Gatehouse Theatre weren't "loss leaders" so maybe she means "loss makers".

I think what it boils down to is her inability to use grammar and spelling checking software and a desire to impress (maybe even bamboozle) by using management speak/corporate buzz words, that she does not fully understand.

Still, thank goodness people like that are in power to decide what is good for us, or where would we be?

Carolyns spelling is shite. Champaign is a city in Illinois or a pop group, according to Wikipedia.

Champagne is the sparkling alcoholic beverage Which can only be called Champagne if it comes from the region of Champagne, France

Leisure centres and sports facilities should be to keep the population healthy and for enjoyment. This profitisation of everything is the reason everything has gone to sh*t, quite literally in the case of our rivers, lakes and beaches
