My trusty old Stafford bike is not so trusty now, in that the front changer is nearing the end of its life. I doubt that I am going to be able to read any identification details from it. It's a three-ring changer, controlled from a handlebar lever. How standardised are these systems? Are things generally interchangeable or do I need to get the 'right one', to suit both the changer and the rings?

I wouldn't mind getting a new rear changer, too - I presume the same answers will apply to that.

Having mostly ridden my 'new' bike on the other island for the last two years, the difference in usability is quite noticeable now.

It's 7 speed at the back, 3 speed at the front and I'm using these combined brake levers and gear shifts, if any of that matters.

There just seems to be an endless variety of similar-looking stuff.

Ah, Back2Bikes!

I should have thought of them, as that's where the bike came from, when my previously trusty old bike was stolen.

Are they still round the back of Greyfriars? I thought they'd moved, but the internet suggests that they're still there.

I may pop round and see what derailleurs they might have available.

I have "upgraded from 3 X 9 TO 1 X 11 So have a x3 front shifter going spare if you want it?
It would require a separate brake lever? so may not be compatible?

Thanks, but I would like to keep the current levers - both bikes will be the same then and I have a spare set of them. too.

They work nicely, just a nudge of the knuckle to go up and a prod of the thumb to go down.

Not sure if you ever sorted this. But typically there's racing bike mechs and there's urban/commuter/MTB mechs. You have to figure out which range your current kit falls into. I would imagine urban/commuter/MTB.

It's probably Tourney in that case. I imagine your frame has a hanger for the mech?

Should be noted that you'll have to split the chain to swap. Don't think you can replace the chain on its own either, the chain stretches and wears all the front and rear cogs, change the chain on its own and it will slip.

I did enquire at Back2Bikes and they don't have a lot of spares stock at the moment, but that should change imminently, they hope, so I'll pop back shortly. It's the front one that's the real object at the moment, and that clamps to the downtube, so the diameter of that needs to be matched.

I think I have the capacity to get round the chain issue, as long as I have the necessary bits to put back on.

The back mech is getting a bit 'floppy' and I might as well do both at the same time, if I can get compatible replacements.

None of this is critical, I can trundle round on it OK as it is, but it would be nice to get it going as well as the other bike is again.

Don't know if you saw, but I posted to Facebook yesterday, about 'The Big Midlands Cycle Jumble' at Penkridge. All manner of cycle spares will be available.
It's being held on 30th October. At Penkridge Market. 08:00-12:30

You can get various clamp sizes for the front mech, you can probably reuse the existing one. Since they aren't going to make a different mech for each bike tube. Steel tubes are skinnier than aluminium because alu frames aren't allowed to flex as they would eventually snap.
