Snow in the middle of the lawn is about 5 inches deep, estimated before it went dark. That must be equal to anything in the last 20 years here.

I reckon we now have about 6 inches of snow in Penkridge. Side roads dodgy, even some of the main roads have a lot of slush with a heavy frost ater tonight it could be interesting. Not thinking of leaving the house until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

Due to council cutbacks -

Just spent all afternoon driving back from Norfolk and the ONLY place we hit problems on the roads was in Stafford town centre. It appears they haven’t bothered to grit the roads. They certainly haven’t done the road outside Asda or the Wolverhampton Road. I dread to think what it’ll be like in the morning.

We went to Stafford without hitting any main roads, but the journey from Tesco Express to the station only took 5 minutes, no longer than it normally would.

to be fair they have had snow ploughs out all day. I'm sure somebody will correct but I believe SCC apply less grit to the road than they did before 2010. this has environmental benefits as well as financial ones. the only downside it takes longer for the grit to do its job, still, all the main roads have been passable with care. not bad considering we have had the worst snow storm in nearly 5 years.

Now living in Cumbria the attitude to snow is different. No great panic. Most fells have 20 snow days a year.

Helvelyn today Temperature minus 7.2°C Maximum wind speed 23.9mph Wind chill minus 18.4°C Average wind speed 20.3mph Wind direction NNE

Would need even less grit if wankers didn't drive with 90% of the car covered in snow....
I'm just waiting for my neighbours to do their usual trick , reversing into my cleared driveway in their snow covered car and depositing all the snow off their car roof as they put the brakes on :ohno:

Enjoying a drop of red.
Well that was an interesting drive back from Liverpool.

Motorway was nicely clear and appeared well gritted then just south of M6 J17 travelling at 70 the traction control light comes on, the steering goes very light and we adopt an angle that looks like contact with the Armco is a certainty. Then just as suddenly grip is resumed, and trajectory goes back to what it was before.

I'd like to put it down to skill but it was in fact sheer blind luck.

The rest of the journey took place at 50mph max and my heart rate has just about reached normal now.

proactive Jr who was in the passenger seat didn't even lift his head from looking at his tablet...
