Stafford Cinema - ups & downs.

Who owns the green patch behind it? That could become important.

It was 'landscaped' a bit in the 90s, but it seems to be largely abandoned now.

That green space is often inhabited by some 'real drinkers'

Are they in 'real life' ?........

Is the cinema statutorily listed or locally listed? I'm fairly sure that area is also within a Conservation Area.

A locally listing accords the building no extra protection, however if a building is locally listed it does mean that SBC consider it to be worthy of retention.

I like the cinema building so I hope it is retained. I'd like to see it used an entertainment venue.

...an entertainment venue given the red light ?......

The 'Greenspace' behind was cleared and tidied by Staffordshire Wildlife shortly after I did voluntary work for them in the mid-90's. It had been a real tip & dumping place for years, dangerous, frequented by alcoholics & other undesirables 'Yes I know'' but I assure people it used to be MUCH worse! My dentist is next door!

Mmmm? Hey, what about convertingting it into a pub? Quite fashionable up & down the UK, even Rugeley has one! ;)

I would like a gig venue, but do we have the catchment to warrant one, certainly one that size? I think acts that could potentially fill that would be booked by wolves/birmingham promoters. Do not get me wrong I would love a proper venue in the town that offered diverse acts and by diverse acts I clearly mean country music acts.

I discussed this with a mate. How about one of those giant play centres for adults and children - like a huge wacky warehouse. I believe the nearest we have is somewhere out Telford way?

Many of the gigs I have been to in other towns and cities, I have listened to accents and many are not local. Many people travel if the band is the right one.

At 750k I can't see it becoming a profitable anything

Hotels are prefabricated

Wetherspoon have 2 existing sites

Stafford once had 8 different live music venues - it's a different game today though

So much concrete, so few opportunities

Agreed, last year I went to concerts in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Nottingham, Tamworth, Preston, Welshpool and London.

I've been to gigs all over the UK and, once, abroad. Venues have ranged in size from arenas down to 100 or so capacity. I've seen reasonably well known acts at small venues in small towns, including Leamington Spa, Lancaster, Llangollen, Rhyl & Rugby, so its not impossible to be on the main circuit with a small venue.

Especially with a motorway access.

I once went to Oswestry...

My point isnt getting bands to play Stafford, thats up to promoters, but if that cinema was made into a venue it would be difficult to get acts to take a punt on playing a venue that size in a town like ours. My guess is, and this is purely hypothetical, is that it would fail, apathy from locals combined with not attracting acts that could feasibly fill that venue. There is nothing I would like more to be proven wrong, but a venue that size would have difficulty in being filled in a city like Wolverhampton, in a town like ours even more difficult.

We've already got those, as provided by the council at Scaffold Place and Riverside.
