Stafford couple banned from buses for being smelly

Did anyone see the front page of the Newsletter this week?

Well, I've had them on my bus a lot. They are very friendly and chatty but it's the fella that really, really smells. I almost had frostbite a couple of weeks ago driving to Eccleshall with my window open as wide as I could get it to go and the smell was still soo bad that I was gagging. The worst thing was I was trying to identify the smell, you know how you do? Is it sweat? Nope. Is it urine? Nope. Is it excreta? Nope. But it was still the most awful smell I have ever had to endure. Maybe it was a combination of all 3 of the above and then left to rot for a few weeks before trying it out on the GFP.

We haven't banned them from our buses YET, but it's only a matter of time, I think. Which is a shame because they are lovely people, clearly they just need a lot of help.

What are other people's thoughts?

I used to live with a guy who stank when at uni, and he really couldn't see a problem. As far as he was concerned he didn't smell at all, so was at a bit of a loss as to why everyone thought he did.

Living with him though, I soon realised it was because he'd bath once a month at best :barf:

yeah, i read that yesterday, and to be honest (especially given your opinion) i agree with the decision.. i worked at argos direct for years as a team leader, and during my time one of the other TLs received complaints from some of their team members about the smell coming from a new starter.. it really was pungent, and was making people feel physically sick, so naturally something had to be done.. it's not an easy thing to deal with though, and it's the sort of thing that no matter how tactful you are you are going to upset the offending party..

The whole thing is a grossly irresponsible piece of journalism (if you can call it journalism). Turning them into a front page story hasn't helped anyone, particularly the two people in question, as they may suffer as a result of people recognising them from the Newsletter's front page. Obviously help is needed from somewhere but that isn't going to come from the Newsletter publicly humiliating them to flog a few papers.

I agree but they obviously approached the newspaper to highlight the issue of being banned from the community mini-bus, where they would probably be the only passengers. On the general bus other people have to travel with them, which I think is the main issue here. I, as the driver, can open my window a luxury which the passengers don't have.

The help which they seem to need the most would come from health and social care which as we all know is under a major change in Stafford with the closure of daycare centres and the like. So just where would these people go to for help?

And as tek-monkey pointed out, does he even know that he smells?

Couldn't agree more, disgraceful.

Hang your head Newsletter, I boycotted buying this tawdry rag a few years back. (Doesn't say much for my principles though, as i regularly read the station copy!)

Yup, but its everywhere. The article I read in a paper today about how the media is fuelling the suicides in bridgend, by making suicide seem more acceptable, covering a whole page. Or that murdered model, where they seem to show as many hot pictures of her as possible when talking about her murder trial, and not showing the murderer (yet the ipswitch killer is always shown, rather than any victims). The pic of missing Maddie on the front page of another (the express?) when the poor girl missing at the min who could possibly be helped is on 7 or so.

They know what sells papers, and exploiting a few people doesn't really matter :|

i was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday.. i was reading the bbc site at work yesterday, and i kept having to minimise it because the front page main headline kept showing different pictures of her looking sultry and alluring, and i didn't want anyone to think i was looking at dodgy sites!!

I've picked them up loads of times and oddly only ever had a problem with them once (Rosie had a dog's egg stuck to her shoe). They're actually very nice people, and not the only ones who have no sense of smell. There are some right odious buggers in this town.

I don't really think that they knew they were going to hit the front page.

What next? "Taxi company refuses to collect senile old git who doesn't know where he lives"?
I can see that coming.

And... "Taxi company bans drug addict for spending all his money on smack, leaving nothing left to pay the fare". Honestly some people deserve culling.
