Stafford Hospital A&E.

I thought i'd just post this to show my opinion on the a&e department at sdgh. About 5 weeks ago now i was involved in a hit and run in highfields. The police and paramedics were with me in a heart beat. The paramedics were very thorough checking me over and made there best efforts to make sure i was comfortable. I arrived at stafford hospital within half an hour of the accident and was given morphine instantly to ease my pain. The staff were wonderful very considerate, they couldnt do enough for me. (I was in a bed next to someone who had a suspected broken toe) who would not stop whinging about waiting around for ever to be seen. Anyway i was taken to xray by a lovely old lady who had the biggest smile on her face. Had my xrays and somehow only had soft tissue damage to my shoulder, wrist and back also whiplash, amazing considering a 1 tonne + car went over my back. Anyway after being in hospital for about 2 hours, they cleaned me up and i was allowed home. So this is me praising Stafford hospital staff and also Stafford police and paramedics.

Unfortunately it is the person " I was in a bed next to someone who had a suspected broken toe) who would not stop whinging about waiting around for ever to be seen." who will moan and say how dreadful it is.

A number of years ago I was having stitches in my head due to an accident . In the next bay was a drunken woman moaning. As the pain killers wore off her moaning, screaming became more noticeable. I asked the nurse would it be possible for me to wheel her out and leave her somewhere!

Had to take eldest to stafford hospitals children's walk in service this evening (seperate entrance to the right of A and E, also open 8am until 10pm) what an excellent service, straight in, assessed and treated. Unit was child friendly and the staff couldn't have been more caring and calmed a very distressed child. Sadly, I don't think many parents know this service is on their doorstep.

It used to have an out-of-hours GP service there - I had to take somebody there some years back after a call to 111 - all NHS Direct could tell me was that it was on Weston Road - after an abortive trip to the hospital, and finding nobody that knew it was there, I tried the Beaconside surgery and even Bradfield House. At this point, I had to abort and come home to try to discover where it was - the private provider's website was no use and their phone wasn't answered out-of-hours. A second call to 111 proved no better. I decided that it was surely at the hospital and set off back there - I happened to see an ambulance man that I know, waiting outside A&E, where I had decided that I would have to dump her, as things were escalating rapidly - he happened to know where it was, hidden behind overgrown bushes.

There is now a sign on the road on the way in, but, at that time, the only sign was on the door and you could only see that when you had actually found the door.

I hope you found it a bit easier.

Much easier to see now, clearly sign posted, with a large red sign showing the way through a tunnel style entrance

Good. It would have taken a party of Gurkhas to find it the time I went - and two staff members had denied that it was there on my first attempt...

Whilst things were being dealt with, I took the opportunity to fill in a comment form - with a suggestion that it might be made slightly less invisible.

I wrote something about it somewhere on here .....we went when it had just opened, stood in the a & e q line for nearly 10 mins before someone told us about it, then the entrance was hard to find, thenstuck in the tunnel at the other end & unable to find the button to press to alert them to open the doors! All very distressing when you have a sobbing child with a broken arm.

Hope its easier to get in now!

When I finally found it, I was lucky enough for somebody to be coming out as I hunted for the button (which didn't work) - when I pointed this out, I was told that people were supposed to tap on the window.....

Luckily, it had stopped raining at that point.

Was at Stafford Hospital a few days ago with the wife, during visit went to see any staff in the ITU where they saved my wife's life:bravo:, on entering it was like being on the deck of the Marie Celeste since it was moved to Stoke :down: :(

Did find one staff member to chat to who informed us that staff moral was at it's lowest. :(:(

Ha! me & 2 other ladies were knocking on the glass door to try & get someone's attention, didn't see the button at all - when I told staff they said someone should of stuck a piece of paper by it with an arrow as no-one could find it!

The service inside was good though, nice to not have to be stuck in a & e with a load of drunks for a change...

Indeed - it was a few years ago when i went and it was OK, once you passed all the Krypton Factor/Crystal Maze tests and actually got in there.

Liking you post because they saved your wife's life, not because its like tba Mary Celeste!

It was really weird just how empty it was when we kept going back for x-rays & cast changes....but, what I find stranger is that they are decorating EVERYWHERE, & they've had LOTS of expensive new equipment....the x-Ray machinery had just been replaced & they kept apologizing for the building noise as they were having a new MRI* machine....why are they checking so much money at it when its been downsized ?

*hoping I've remembered the name - the donut thing that can see everything! :strange:

I had an accident at work, got dropped off @ A&E about 3pm by 5pm was home (bet you wouldn't get that kind of service at the royal stoke or whatever its called) after being x-rayed and put in a temporary cast! The staff in all departments that saw me, were some of the most helpful people i had ever met in Stafford!! Then my return on Friday to see the consultant and be re-plastered was just as fab!!

Odd how the return of 24 hour A&E promised by the Cons hasn't happened. Anyone would think they just said it to get re-elected.

Think the entrance to the children's A and E / walk in unit is better sign posted now and there is a sign on the door to tell let you know the that the bell to ring for attention to get in is behind you. Odd place to put the bell but that aside, the, service was very good and much appreciated...wouldn't have wanted to drive to Stoke with a distressed child.
