Stafford Leisure Centre To Close

This isn't the Leisure Centre built by Trent City Securities, is it? Construction of the new (smaller) leisure centre at Lammascote was one of the conditions for them getting the Riverside site, on which they were supposed to be building 'executive' apartments, a new shopping mall and a cinema complex -- until the company went up the spout last summer. Net result: No leisure centre in Stafford, no new apartments, no new mall and no new cinema (as if we needed the last three) but one big privately owned car park.

It’s difficult to shake the feeling that this bodge up is just another example of how poorly the local (Tory) council has performed. Who can cite a single positive change they’ve made in Stafford? Just a bunch of time servers and paper shufflers who’s only talent is for making bad deals.

Huh...?

Is it wrong of me to be suspicious of someone whose first post so close to election time is to slate the Conservatives?!?!?

The new leisure centre may well be inferior to the old Riverside, with smaller and less pools and less facilities in general, but at least SBC had the sense to get the leisure centre built before all the other development that it was to pay for via land swaps etc.

The original plans for the site that now lies vacant at Riverside were rushed through and were quite literally a carbuncle and a blot on the landscape of Stafford. The recession has at least saved us from that monstrosity for the moment.

I don't think I know what you know, which is intriguing Basil! You have hinted in other posts about this site, I'm quite impressed by how much you do know at times.

Is that going to need new planning then, due to the time elapsed?

Sorry for the typos. Will try harder in future.

The timing was incidental (and my third comment) but you're right about it being politically motivated because I don't have any confidence in the local Tory-led council. I just don't see that they've achieved much that's very positive. I'm fairly sure they're not bad people; they're just not very good at running Stafford.
