+ Elephant & Castle?

+ what had been Bates' gun shop?

The White Lion may be the only one that was actually lost...

Some others that are still there might legitimately be described as 'lost' now, as far as many are concerned - the Grapes and the Four Crosses, perhaps?

That wasn't meant to be a definitive list.
The Elephant and Castle closed in October 1970 so was before my time and 7 Market Square was later than I was thinking of.
I remember Gordon Eccles at the White Lion before it closed in January 1976 and he moved to the Chains.
i didn't know the Grapes and the Four Crosses were closed or threatened.

They're not closed, just horrible.

Thus, effectively 'lost' to most people...

Every pub/club has it's place, if it wasn't for the likes of grapes more people you wouldn't want would be in the other pubs you'd go to.

At least it's cheap and open late in the week! normally a place I go to if I want some more drinks with some pals from previous pub and everywhere else is shut

a lot of army guys go there, and some strange people though, it's probably proactives local.

I lived a literal stones throw from the Shepherds Bush but never went in. Forever lost to dodgy looking hairdressers and now flats. What was it like?
Similar theme, I see they have finally started building on the plot of land that was the Albion.

Absolutely, I would dread them actually closing and forcing people into other places.

I went in once, possibly twice, as part of a 'complete pub tour' - around 1980ish.

It had an 'ambience' that was probably worse than the reality.

You got the impression that, if you wanted a Ford Capri, a pint would persuade someone to nip out and get one for you.

More often that not on a weekend evening I'd see former work colleagues drinking in the Grapes.

I only ever went to the Shepherds Bushes a couple of times and can't think of anything to recommend it.
Briefly as 'Spit and Sawdust' it was worse.

Enjoying a drop of red.

Definitely keep the scummy folk in there to keep the other pubs nice for the rest of us.

I always felt the aura of the Bushes was probably worse than the reality - I don't ever remember any public problems.

And I've never really been able to explain whey 'Spit and Sawdust' sounds slightly better than 'Sawdust and Spit'.

Over to you guys.

But what about the thread for the pubs that aren't in Stafford that we have known and lost or the thread about the thousands that used to flock to Stafford for the pubs we have known and lost and another thread about where are the thousands that used to flock to Stafford for the pubs we have known and lost. I could go on......
