I am sorry, but I am amazed that this project still has enough supporters, to make it possible to have a working party! I am not a Baswich resident, and as said I do not follow their website; however the last bit posted on it on here prior to the last three, was may 2016. In that time I had heard nothing about it. I thought it had died a death, I also understand the original funding was via the EU community fund! Nuff said! :shifty: . Caps doffed to these volunteers, I admire their fortitude, but if there original avowed plan to create a navigable link from the Staffs and Worcester canal to the Sow, that continued to Stafford town centre, looked pretty optimistic to say the least. The promise of European money and backing from the Council, made it look unlikely but possible????. 3 years on, they look to be *issing in the wind. Sorry !

Am busy so cannot grace the working party with my presence.Wish them, good digging weather, and all my best!

I have followed the links and certainly done a lot since the last time I was at Baswich, impressive. What I would find more concerning is that no matter how impressive the work on the old basin is, any boat waiting there, has no lock to go down, and a good few 100 yards to go to the river, and that's just fields at present! Then the hard work will begin, making an increasingly shallow river navigable, for a mile into town! Sorry to be negative, I may be missing something, the objectives may have changed. I can see the benefit of engaging people in a community project/task, but is it not unfair to people to ask them to volunteer their time to a task that has not progressed from the side of the canal in many years?

As I have said I am sorry to be such a doom monger, it gives you another opportunity to argue your case, and at least shows that I am interested in the progress of this wonderful idea. I have seen the added value a navigable water way can be to a town, (Lots of examples!) and god help us Stafford needs some added value. As I say, all power possible to your collective elbows, best of luck, I fear you may need it, Hope this post comes back to haunt me! :embarrass:

Am sure people may think, "If you're that interested, Get off your harris, and do some work!", but as I have intimated, I am not sure my limited spare time would be best used in volunteering at present. By all means convince me I am wrong, and that I have maligned the SRL unfairly. I will probably retire in about 10 years, so if the project is still progressing, but unfinished then, I would love to join you.

Complete it, make me eat my words! (PLEASE! Ed ;))

Well thanks Grimmy for that 'Canal Boat' article, certainly gives me food for thought! I think I will have to rain back on my bombastic aquatic observation! I'm chastened! I still think there is a huge way to go, literally. and if I'm honest I think it unlikely to ultimately successful. But I wish them all the best in their
ambitious endeavour! IF it does ever make as far as building a marina near the town centre, then what a courageous effort it would be, and what a fantastic boon it could be to the ailing County Town! Makes you think, certainly got me dreaming!

Well done to all those people doing a fantastic job.

There was a shopping trolley in the canal near the bridge at the bottom of Radford Bank the last few days. Would have struggled to get to it myself and haul it out. Hope someone is able to get that out as well sometime .

Enjoying a drop of red.
Worthy though that may well be, people might be keen to hang on to any spare cash they have in the current excitement, especially with Christmas coming up.

I have tried to contact these guys a couple of times to potentially provide some assistance. I work for a large construction company who like to get involved in community projects. I have never heard a peep back from them though.

You are absolutely right 57, my cynicism is unworthy of the vision. I do wish them all the best, I think they have a MASSIVE job. They are going to have to get across the Penk in order to reach the Sow. The Penk has been rerouted since the last time the link was used. When they have overcome that there will be a huge job to do on the Sow, in order to make it navigable. And I don't want to think about the way all this may affect the watercourse's capacity to cope with flooding that has plagued the Sow valley! As I said, all the best to them, am sure if it ever comes to fruition, the water management will be considered, but I will be very surprised if I ever travel by longboat from Milford to Stafford Town Centre! We shall see! :stafford:
"travel by longboat from Milford to Stafford Town Centre".
Theo allegedly 'lives' in Milford.
What a marvellous photo opportunity stepping off a narrow boat in Stafford town centre would be for her.
It probably wouldn't be wide or deep enough for a longboat.

I'm not connected in any way I'm afraid so can't be of any assistance bar persevere?

Or people might have saved thousands over lockdown and be happy to donate. 'Lockdown minted' is a phrase in regular use where I work as we have had the availability of copious overtime since March and not that much for us to spend our financial gains on!
