Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

The counter upstairs in HSBC closes on Friday. Rest remains open but presumably without any counter service.
I used to pay cheques in there for someone else, up to a few years ago. I found the machines downstairs so frustrating that I got them to get an 'old fashioned' paying-in book, which also kept the counterfoils neatly filed in order.

I felt, even then, that they really didn't want people using the counter. It was basically hidden in a secret location, even if you knew that there actually was a counter. There were often bouncers at the bottom of the stairs to try to blag you into using the machines, if you attempted to go up the stairs. I used to have the book in my hand before I entered, to out-manoeuvre them, but they got used to me, eventually.

It was the same set up when it was Midland bank , so it hasn't changed then.

The counter was downstairs in my Midland Bank days. I was there until October 1982.
And mine , but changed from them many moons ago as had an argument with them about crap service so closed my account on the spot and got my wages paid in elsewhere instead. Glad I did now as last time I went in to cash a cheque from my building society (stupid system, building society wrote a cheque when wanting to withdraw cash , then cheque had to be taken across Market Square to HSBC to get the cash ) they had right miserable staff on at the 2 counters hidden upstairs.

I left when they charged me for being under the new minimum credit limit, without telling me it had changed.

They had such a snotty attitude about it that I went to the Co-op, in the hope that they might be the most different - no issues in almost forty years.

The Midland even snookered me early the following year - I got a letter from SBC demanding my final 'monthly' rates payment, despite have a standing order in place, which had been transferred. The Co-op showed me the actual, incorrect document that the Midland had sent them. At the time SBC banked with the Midland, so I suggested that they asked their bank why they had done that.

Well, Forum scores again.
I’ve had a business account at HSBC Stafford for over 35 years & a personal account for probably 10 years previous & this is the first I’ve heard of them closing the counters. They obviously don’t think I need to know this information. Mind you, I haven’t been upstairs for probably 10 years since the tried to charge me £75 to pay in £3000 cash. (They’d never charged previously). They did refund it that time. I can’t actually remember the last time I went in the branch, on the odd occasion I need to use the counter I just go to the local post office

It was only by chance I overheard the person in front of me asking them when they closed and then I checked with the cashier. Couldn’t see any signs inside saying anything about it but he did say I could go to the post office to pay euros in in future (god bless my granny who thinks it’s still a good idea to post cash from abroad )

We've had to apply for a card now to enable us to deposit funds at Stafford branch. It has just occurred to me to enquire whether we need a card for each account.

You can use the counter service at any post office for HSBC accounts. You will need a card for each account unless you do as I do & deposit cash into my personal account then transfer it online to other accounts. It saves me a fortune on the odd occasion I have customers pay me in cash (some still think it’s better for me

So, have checked with HSBC and it is one card for each account/person making deposits.
14 accounts and 3 or 4 potential folks making deposits. Then 14 guys 'in the field' who will also need cards. Fortunately those guys will only need cards for 3 or 4 accounts each.
With an application form needed for each card that's a fair old bit of setting up.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Noticed the sh1te burger place in Mill Street has had a sign in the window for at least the last couple of weeks saying cash only.

That usually means one of two things...
