Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Baswich Lane Co-op has been pencilled in for closure in the next few months.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it had been sold to another business and will be rebranded as something like a Spar etc (can't remember which other brands they have).

It's a pretty small store. There's four stores in the area which is a bit excessive. Also, what clever person decided to undertake a major refit of the big co-op store just as there's roadworks making it more difficult to get into town.

Stafford aquatics seems to be in trouble.
The live animal license expired before they renewed its. Now it's having to go through the process again.
The back room is now empty and big sale on.

From a Co-op Members email - " Following a full review of our trading estate, we've made the difficult decision to transfer the Stafford, Baswich Lane store to Samy Limited. We expect the store will continue to trade into the new year."

Yes it'll still be a convenience store, but branded a Budgens or a Spar or a whatever's in the Samy portfolio.

Not great for lovers of cabbage, but better than an absolute lack of convenience.

Greggs on the high street opposite Smith's seems to have closed, saying they'll be back in the near future and in the meantime to use the Greggs at Riverside. I noticed the path in-between Greggs and Boots has also been closed for the last few weeks, wonder if there's some sort of building issue?

I used to work in the building above Greggs, I noticed there was lots of scaffolding up at the side of the building there other day....the top 2 floors have been empty fir over 19 years , so I hate to think of the state of it now.

That lane actually has a name - Averil's Entry - although, I haven't heard it said for a few decades now and I'm not sure if there has been a sign for a long time, if there ever was.

There was Averil's chemist's shop there in the distant past.

I did spot the sign , but I figured no one would know where it is 🤣, as for the empty floors above, I think they were in the middle of converting them to flats.

Nothings been done to them for years when Warren Hill insurance (taken over by another insurance company for about another year, then left for a site on beaconside) were the occupants, which is way over 19years ago. The floors above weren't in the best condition years ago when I worked there... It was spread over 3 floors at weird levels, not one on top of each other , nothing could be changed as I believe it was a listed building, lots of beams & strange crooked stairs windows that couldn't be changed, but the back of the building was much newer, all paper files were kept there....the place is much larger than it looks, a real rabbit warren.
