Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

How local is local?

They still use beads and candle light in the Railway Building Society after having their abacus hacked a couple of years ago, now renamed the Stafford Building Society ( do they know something? Imagine closing Stafford station, all that interbreeding that would follow )

The Coop Bank is now owned by Coventry Building Society ( 48 miles )

The Credit Union in Stafford Street appears to have left this earth

The Yorkshire Bank appears to have gone 70 miles home anall

Martins Bank now a soccerball clothing shop after failing as a bar

Bill Cash is King !

Through your app? With Barclays, you scan the cheque using the online app & it gets paid straight into your bank (1-3 days)...I have relatives that are dinosaurs 🦖 🦕

I went to NatWest today to do exactly that and whilst I was in the queue one of the screens popped up to say I could pay cheques in via the app.

Also saw the notice saying they were shutting in June.

I'm thinking of moving to a local bank/ building society so that I can talk to an actual person when I need to.

There’s a limit on that if I believe £2k per cheque and £10k per day.

Without going into too much detail of the quantity, it was my share of a house sale in the south so… exceeded that somewhat.

I’ll pay for the verification for bank transfer for the remainder I think

I got my 8 quid car tax refund by a cheque in the post the other day (less because car dealership had c0cked up and not done car transfer , discovered by fines letter through the door for driving uninsured since part exchanging it in October! So missed out on a few months refund. ).

Would have thought seeing as I'd paid it on-line that they could have refunded straight into my bank account instead. (Or are they hoping the cheque may go astray in the post and not actually get cashed....)

Deposited on the App , but would have been quicker hopping on a bus to town to pay into the bank machines by the time my phone crap camera had got it in focus good enough, right light and background etc to accept .

I went to the high street bank to transfer my car purchase money in October , thinking the maximum daily transfer I could do myself on line is £10k.

After queuing for ages at the desk (only for them to say they can't do it at the counter , needed to have an appointment with a colleague in the branch to do it, with over an hours wait :ohno: ...Stafford bank used to do it at the bank counters in minutes!)

was told that I could transfer more myself now , daily limit had gone up from the previous £10k.

Can't remember if teller said up to £20,000 or £25,000 a day but it worked!

I think a number of the banking/payment limits were increased during the first few months of the first Covid lockdown.

W H Smiths are expected to sell all their high street shops, not surprising given how few customers I see in the Stafford one when I use the Post Office upstairs.

Yeah transfer limits can be nice and high but cheque payments via apps are still heavily capped

Yes, might sell to someone who will keep the shops open, if not then what will happen to all the Post Offices that Smiths have acquired?

The fact that they don't invest in their bricks and mortar, and cannot even process a rebrand tells you everything...

Probably move into the corner of another high street shop that remains open, not that they'll make much money from the franchise.
Maybe a Co-op, like Penkridge's that I used on Friday.

To introduce pubs into yet another thread, the former George & Fox. I (occasionally) use the other Co-op in Penkridge which has a cash machine. Not sure how many high street shops in Stafford would take a Post Office.

Yes, and I remember it as Foxeys for a while.
I find cask machines too impersonal, like drinking at home instead of in a proper pub ( four Lichfield pubs this lunchtime, since you've introduced pubs into this topic )

Just heard today that the TK Maxx in Stafford is closing down and moving into what is currently Home Sense at Queens.

So it looks like Home Sense is going which is a shame, I much prefer the choice of home stuff than the clothes.
