Lots of little nasties get performed by oil companies. Some decades ago I was sailing on a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier, i.e. a supertanker.) We were bringing in 260,000 tonnes of crude from the Gulf via the Cape of Good Hope (too big for Suez.) As we came up the West African coast in September, we were ordered into a Senegal anchorage and told to wait for a month then proceed.
Why ?
At more than 7 barrels to the tonne, the normal winter increase of a few dollars per barrel still left a healthy extra profit, more than enough to cover incidental expenses such as crew wages, a bit of generator fuel and anchorage fees.
Oil companies write their own rules.
