Hot on the heels of a year of works on the A34 at Redhill, a new roundabout will be installed over the next 18 months, north of the new junction, to support a new Pets at Home 670,000sq ft storage and distribution centre, that will create 800 jobs.

Pets at Home is building a 670,000sq ft storage and distribution centre at Stafford North Business Park, off the A34 – you’ve probably seen the massive warehouse whilst driving over towards Stafford. The development will create up to 800 jobs and will add to the other distribution centres located around J14 of the M6.

The developer-funded scheme will take 18 months to complete and is set to begin on Monday, 14th February. While traffic flow in both directions will be maintained for most of the scheme, some overnight closures will be needed and publicised closer to the time.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said:

“This is a significant business development which will bring hundreds of jobs to Staffordshire. It is in a prime location with excellent connectivity on the A34 and close to the M6 J14.

“This will be a major road project but vital in providing adequate access to the development and maintaining good traffic flow to traffic on the A34.

“We understand that this follows on quickly from the junction scheme south of this site for the new housing development and would again thank people for their patience while work is carried out.

“The company is keen to move forward with the scheme as soon as possible so it can be operational at the earliest opportunity.”

Throughout the scheme traffic management will be in place and include a lowered temporary speed limit. Whitgreave Lane will be closed at its junction with the A34 from March 1 for 14 months and the gap closed in the central reservation.

Lane closures will be necessary and a contraflow system put in place for approximately 12 months. Bus stops at Redhill Farm and Whitgreave Lane will not be operational during the scheme, though pedestrian access along the A34 will be maintained throughout.

When the scheme begins, people will be able to find out the latest information at: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/a34stoneroad

Looks like there will be another roundabout going on the A34 near Whitgreave to give access to a new Pets at home distribution centre.
So roundabout (and Toucan crossings), then traffic lights, then another roundabout. That's really going to help traffic flow...

Enjoying a drop of red.

That is the Highways department's mission statement. You have to admire how well they have met it on Stafford's roads.

Treasury requirement? The more time people are sitting around with their engines idling, the more fuel they are using and the more income the Treasury gets from fuel duty.

For the sake of comparison, I went over the M7 today at eleven minutes past one in the afternoon - it still has proper hard shoulders and seems fairly uncongested.

For the sake of comparison, London alone has more than 150% the population of the entire nation of Ireland.

England as a whole has ten times the population of Ireland, whilst being only, what, one and a half times larger?

Ireland has a population density of 72 people per square kilometre, in England it is 280.

I like apples, but i also like oranges.

For crying out loud, leave the A34 alone!! Can't believe this, it's taken them a whole year to create a side road & a right hand turn lane which should have been finished by now. In theory, all the roadworks should be gone come Monday, but it doesn't look like it at Redhill. Now another 18 months to create a circle in the road?? Unbelievable! I know which road will be my new short-cut to avoid all this nonsense.

This as well??? Christ! Although the queueing blocking the Southbound A34 traffic has become silly now, although that really isn't an approach, it's the exit that needs improving. Are they installing traffic lights? What are the details for this? This plus the new roundabout will be hellish.

Yet people like Banksy and Linekar think we can welcome in plenty more people.

That's your take?

So would you prefer that these desperate people died while still in Syria and Afghanistan, rather than them get as far as drowning in the English Channel? I suppose it's whatever best helps congestion on the A f'ing 34.

Perhaps we could lure them to go on, go on, go on, to Ireland, with the promise of open roads and hooded crows - *only another 500 nautical miles to go, lads, put your backs into it*

Last time I checked a map France was the other side of the channel. They are crossing the channel to leave France and enter the uk.

Although not in the UK, Alderney and Jersey look fairly conveniently situated for an exit from France, yet there seems to be little traffic in that direction. Maybe there are official and unofficial infrastructure issues that make that route awkward. Perhaps the sea conditions are a bit more 'open'?

More likely the fact they are not in the UK....
