Abnormal Load Once again, the A34 north of Stafford will close in both directions this Saturday morning, March 4, due to an abnormal load movement. The closure will be for a two-hour period between 7am and 11am from the Redhill roundabout to Yarlet Lane.

During the closure, the county council’s highways team will perform urgent roadside tree maintenance. This means the junction with Whitgreave Lane will be closed.

For safety reasons, no vehicles will be allowed on the route during the closure period while the load passes through. It will be escorted by police, and the closure will be lifted as soon as possible – the load is being transported from GE Stafford to Cheshire.

Electronic variable message signs will be in place to warn motorists of the closure and advise using other routes. These will be updated on Saturday morning with more precise closure times as the load progresses.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said:

“With these abnormal load movements along the A34 there is limited flexibility as to when they take place.

“While the load will be transported relatively quickly, we do need the two-hour closure as we are still unsure of the exact time of transportation.

“Signs will be updated with more precise times on Saturday morning. We will be carrying out some urgent tree maintenance work at the same time to maximise use of the closure.

“We’d like to thank people for their patience and understanding during this period.”

UPDATE 20/03/23

Abnormal Loads

Abnormal load movements will be travelling northbound on the A34 Stone Road, Stafford through the extents of the highway works on the following dates:

  • Saturday 25 March 2023.
  • Saturday 1 April 2023.

To facilitate each abnormal load, it will be necessary to temporarily close the A34 in both directions between Yarlet Lane and Redhill roundabout for a period of approximately 1.5 hours between the times identified below whilst the cones and cylinders through the section of roadworks are removed and replaced. For safety reasons, it will not be possible to permit traffic, (except emergency blue light vehicles) to travel between the closure points until the cones and cylinders have been reinstated once the abnormal load has passed through, which we expect will be approximately 1.5 hours after the road closure is implemented.

  • Saturday 25 March 2023. A34 closed for approx. 1.5 hours between 07:00 – 11:00.
  • Saturday 1 April 2023. A34 closed for approx. 1.5 hours between 07:00 – 11:00.

The loads will be escorted by Staffordshire Police who will work alongside our contractor’s traffic management team to manage the loads through the works area as swiftly as possible, however we are expecting a significant amount of disruption as a result of these latest movements.

Electronic variable message signs (VMS) are installed at strategic locations on the A34 to provide advance notification of the next closure and to advise road users to use alternative routes where possible – these will be updated for each movement once the previous movement has taken place. Unfortunately, due to the size of the abnormal load there are a number of factors outside of our control which will affect the exact timing of the closure, and therefore we’re unable to state the exact time of the closure.

The loads will continue northbound on the A34 under police escort towards the Staffordshire/Cheshire boundary.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

The forthcoming abnormal load movement which is due to occur on Saturday morning April Fool's Day - is this some kind of joke??

Couldn't they have done it all last week?

It's it really the end of the world. Plenty of notice has been given and it's not like there aren't alternative routes.

Or am I missing something?

That's absolutely ridiculous! Just more excuses to get bloody cameras watching us!
I was recently lambasted for my views on 15 minute cities being about control rather than saving us. Most one way streets are single direction because there are so many cars parked and it's not safe to have bi-directional. Turning streets into 2 way with cars that are virtually silent is a recipe for disaster. Still, as long as they know what we are up to and can fine us at every chance - GREAT!!
As is regularly pointed out to you, do not believe everything you read on the internet. It’s an article written by April Prima. It’s a joke.
