Because more often than not the Road actually isn't Closed.
She was unlucky !

We quite often have ”Road Closed” signs going in and/ or out of our village, the problem being that the signs don’t actually say at what point the road is closed, if indeed at all.

So we usually just ignore the signs so that we can actually get home, and we usually can, because the road isn’t closed at all.

Until last Monday when ALL roads were closed and none of us could leave the village.
Words were had and a road was opened so that we could escape.

I once found a chap trying to turn an artic round on Sandon Road, using the Fonthill Road junction, because there was a Road Ahead Closed sign and he believed it, thinking he couldn't get to Astonfields. The road was actually only blocked at the Shell garage and Astonfields was as accessible to him as it ever is.

Carole,
Yes indeed.
As I commented "more often than not the Road actually isn't Closed".

Apparently a substantial concrete rail bridge over the M62 is being replaced this w/e - and just one further w/e. How are they doing that in such a short time when roadworks in Stafford seem to involve the work of several generations (like building cathedrals). Is a Chinese team rebuilding the bridge ?

The bridge is already built, it just needs to be pushed over the road to rest on the opposite pier. So no actual digging up of the road.

Just driven home, past the prison, on towards Woolies then Sainsburys. Came to pull up at the lights by the old Prison visitor centre and there was a blue pick up in front of me. DY18FFL. The red lights weren't for him, drove straight through without a care. Sped through the next lot quick as he could. Bit of a w4nker

Glam, Sadly not everyone respects other road users in the way you and I do.
250,000 motorists are banned from driving each year with speeding the most common offence even though most get away with it.

but first we must spend all of the money on a unnecessary bike road on an already congested section of highway that will be ignored by those who we aim to use it.

Part of the funding agreement was a certain amount has to be spent on infrastructure for non-motor vehicles, and if they actually start joining up our abomination of a cycle network more people might use it. As it is jumping on and off roads is more dangerous than just staying on the road the whole time.

The congestion along Browning Street in rush hour is particularly troublesome recently since the new bypass around the back of Lidl opened. Traffic blocks the junction next to "Forgate Street Mini Market" so vehicles cannot exit. It backs up all along Sandon Road so vehicles can't enter/exit the mini roundabout. Not sure why more cars don't turn left to go alongside the jail and round the roundabout past Sainsbury's that way instead, it'll be much quicker. Obviously the lights at Halfords and Browning Street and road set up aren't optimised at all. Sandon Road near the old Stafford Cinema used to be free of holdups in the morning, not any more.
