Whilst walking to the station this morning I noticed a new sign put up by the entrance. It appears that the car park is now under the control of NCP (don't think they looked after it previously) and that would probably explain the hike in charges....

I took this picture in August last year - an NCP logo is just visible at the bottom.

I wonder if the "20 minutes free" facility will continue?

New train company awarded the West Coast Mainline (& it's promising more trains and better stations) - https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/news/stoke-on-trent-news/new-train-company-awarded-west-3208468

The Sentinel Says said:
On hearing the news First Trenitalia has pledged:

  • An additional 263 extra services each week by 2022;
  • Improvements to key stations including Birmingham, Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent;
  • More investment in low emission trains;
  • To run 50,0000 training days and create more apprenticeships.

First won the West Coast franchise back in 2012, before the franchise award was scrapped, following a legal challenge by Virgin (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19809717).

When they 'won' the 2012 franchise, First had indicated that there would be two significant improvements for Stafford:
  • trains between London Euston/Birmingham New Street and Glasgow/Edinburgh would stop at Stafford; and
  • the introduction of a late (post 23:00 service from London Euston to Stafford.
With the scrapping of the award, both of the above never happened. It will be interesting to see if there are any significant improvements for Stafford this time.

On Saturday, I was asked "Can you pick Mum up from the station on Tuesday?"

"Probably, tell me the ETA and I'll confirm on Monday"

Nothing - until today, at 1:30pm - "She's on the 12:46."

So I look up the arrival time myself, and it's doable - 14:37.

I venture out through the floods and chaos - but, she doesn't get off the 14:37 arrival and she's not still on it. No mobile phone, of course.

Having a quick look around in case I've missed her, I am spotted by St Michael, the Patron Saint of Rail Travellers.

"Are you looking for your usual one?" ( She will normally be on the "Assistance" list)

"Yes, but no sign."

"Ah, I wasn't on that platform. You have another look and I'll be back in a minute"

Not long later - "Is her name *****?"

"Yes."

"She's not on that train, she's on the next one in an hour - we have her down as getting a taxi."

"Well, I'll pick her up, if I can get back"

"OK."

I return at 15:37 and he's waiting with her on the seat by the bookshop.
