Time to renew! And oh.my.gawd. Prices are CRAZY!

I always fix my tarriff for the year ahead and avoid going onto a the variable rate as it's usually much higher.

However this time Eons variable tarriff is
20p - unit. 27p Standing Charge (correct of last week) which is cheaper than any fixed rate I can find online.

Am I missing something? Would really appreciate some advice on the best thing to do!

Thank you!!

ps. It's just electricity I need - I don't have mains gas. I am also limited to the companies that will provide to me due to my remote location

I’ve been looking at quotes for my electric today and I only managed to find one that promised a whopping saving of £1 a year 😒 the rest were about the same as I already pay/ a little more, there seemed to be quite a few that said they weren’t taking on new customers though…. Clearly I’m no help 😂 sorry

I think the advice is not to move right now. The cap is likely to rise about £700 in April, putting lots of people into poverty.

If you can move to someone who can fix the rates and not charge a fee to leave them that's beneficial. That said with the number of suppliers who excited the industry last year it will be tricky.

If it's any consolation, I work in the industry and some of the customers I manage who purchase their energy flexibly have been stung to the tune of an extra million quid per month. All because they had been far too comfortable with the prior energy charges to want to hedge correctly...

I have no choice, my current deal ends 31st January!
Once your deal ends I suspect you will move to the price cap rate. At the moment the price cap rate is cheaper than any of the fixed or variable rate deals on offer so the advice would probably still be to stay where you are unless you really have to move.

Martin Lewis explained this well in his last TV programme - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/n...ergy-price-cap-s-now-predicted-to-rise-a-hor/

I pay my energy bills quarterly and my last meter reading / bill was around 6 weeks before the April 1st increase. Do the energy companies (in my case British Gas) make any allowance for the pre-April cheaper tariff. I read somewhere to take a picture of my meter displays on March 31st as ‘evidence’ of what I’d used - but that can be manipulated in Photoshop !

It's not worth manipulating anything to be honest. If you submit a reading now it will be entered in the system and they should Pro rata the consumption for when the charges changed.

Has anyone else had an email from British Gas with a deal to fix your Electricity price (no mention of Gas) from now until October 2023. In simple numbers it means that my electricity spending was £600 for last year but I can fix it at £1000. If I use more (or less) electricity in the next year it will be priced at the new rate. If electricity prices should fall my rate will be reduced accordingly. Not sure whether to accept or not.

I'm with British Gas and haven't had any emails like that.

I'll post on here if I do but sounds like a scam to me.
I did receive this a few days ago though.

If you get a suspicious email

It’s not always easy to spot phishing emails. These online scams appear to be from legitimate companies and link through to fake websites asking you to enter your personal information. They can often be very sophisticated and convincing, so it’s important to know what to look for.

If you’re in doubt over any email claiming to be from us, don’t click any links. Please attach it to a new email and send it to phishing@britishgas.co.uk. Then delete it straight away.

If you are a British Gas Business customer and have received a suspicious email, then please visit UKB online-security webpage.

Out of interest did it adress you by name as BG always use your full name in emails ?

Update from a few posts ago: I’ve received a notification for both gas AND electricity from British Gas. Basically, my combined gas / electric bills for the past year were approx £1,000. If my usage were the same I’d pay (approx) £1,800 - fixed until October 2023 - and reductions if, by any remote chance, energy prices dropped - which sounds like a worthwhile offer in the current escalating price frenzy. Regarding the authenticity of the emails from BG, they included my name, full address / postcode plus the 12 digit number for each account. The emails had the typographical ‘look’ of the regular BG website, so they seem authentic. However, when I rang BG to speak to someone, the operator didn’t seem familiar with ‘my’ particular offer and said he would ‘find out and get back to me’ which seems weird. You’d think they would have been briefed about any new payment schemes.
