Talk to me about solar panels.

So if I pay them 4k now, in 18 months they start generating and from then on my electricity is free? Have I missed something obvious here as that seems too good an offer, and it says I'll save 300 a year which is nowhere near what I pay. I use about 7000kw
Your wind farm share effectively covers the cost of your electricity, but not the distribution costs / overheads. However, as you know, there are ways to get your electricity much cheaper than the standard tariff rates.

When the scheme was launched the credit, for your share of the windfarm, was expected to equate to less than 5p per kWh. However, things have changed and the current credit, based on current prices, is calculated to be 18p per kWh.

Now 18p per kWh isn't enough to cover all of the cost of your electricity if you are on a standard tariff, but it is more than enough if you are purchasing all/most of your electricity at night rates.

Having purchased my share of the windfarm (100% of my current usage), I intend to purchase enough battery storage to cover what I would use on most days. Then I will switch to Octopus Go (current night rate 7.5p per kWh). Then during each night period on Octopus Go, I will recharge my storage batteries (plus my EV and anything else that can be charged at any time), and draw down on that stored electricity through the day.

My current estimated return on the up front investment is approximately 5 years, less if electricity prices rise further, a bit more if prices were to fall.

Still looking at this, am I right in saying if prices ever returned to circa 20p/kW the wind farm would be back to giving me 5p? The investment seems similar for my usage to a 4kw solar installation, that would average 10kw/day and if I used 5 would give a better return I think?

I dunno, brain needs to kick in!

There are a number of variables, but the latest calculation produced by Ripple based on the current price cap, is a return of 14.6p per kWh. So, if you are currently paying 28p per kWh then the residual cost would be 13.4p per kWh.

So, if you apply that residual cost to a price of 20p per kWh, then the wind farm would be returning around 6.6p per kWh (20p less 13.4p).

At the moment, a significant price increase in October seems the most likely outcome, so the returns are likely to increase further, at least in the short term. Beyond that is anyone's guess.

Edit: If anyone is interested in investing over £1,000 in the wind farm, I've got a referral code I can pass on. It would earn us £25 each.

I've got admit, I've thought about having these solar panel things fitted when I eventually get round to having the roof done. There's at least 1 home round here with them.

Got a call back, can only get 8 panels on the roof split between the main and the flat, about 8k for 3kw. More than I hoped but also the only person that bothered to quote!

I know a guy who does solar. Not sure if you've contacted them yet, NPES they run out of Essington. https://www.facebook.com/Npessolar/ They've been winning small business awards recently.
Thanks for that as well. As they are a GivEnergy battery installer, I'll see if they can quote me for my battery installation.

I've delayed going ahead slightly, as GivEnergy are in the process of replacing their 8.2kWh battery with a 9.5kWh battery, so I thought I'd hang on until the new one is available (expected to be June 2022).

God I’d love to get solar

But I’d also like a decent FIT. If we’re paying 45p for our leccy why should I get 0p for selling mine back?

Next house maybe… if they ever do a proper grant and take it seriously.

They made the last scheme specifically not include solar panels, just the heating systems. Prices are rapidly climbing, git a second quote for 16k with an 8kw battery!

Also, got a spare PC with a gfx card capable of crypto mining? If so hammer that when it's sunny! If I had a hot water tank I'd divert spare energy to that, unfortunately I don't really have anything.

I tried to message those mentioned by @Gadget but said they are very busy and to email instead. Done that with a pic of my roof etc. and will see what they say.

It seems they are extremely busy too, as I'm still waiting for them to give me a quote. Clearly the upsurge in demand is good for them, but not so good for me.
Nothi g yet from these but my other quotes are around 12k for 4kw solar and 6kw battery, this was 8k last year!

I'm not quite sure what the impact on them as a business is but Jon's Mom just passed away. As a close knit team I'd imagine things will be a bit off for a week or so. Sorry for your long wait guys. I'd nudge them for you but now just seems inappropriate.

No rush, looks like I'm off to Latvia for a while anyway so wouldn't likely do it til home again.

Placed my order this morning for my GivEnergy battery system. There will be a bit of a wait for installation though, as I've opted to go with the new higher capacity 9.5kWh battery, which isn't due in until late July 2022.

The system is expandable, so if I want to add more batteries, it is pretty straightforward and I've paid a small extra amount to have it connected up to operate during a power cut.

Do you mind me asking a ballpark figure? And is this without solar?
