Taming Window's Defender?

Goldilox

How do I edit this?
If I boot up my laptop whilst connected to a power supply it immediately runs two processes called Antimalware Service Executable & Service Host Local System which completely eat all the processing power for the first 15 - 20 minutes it's on, causing my 6 month old laptop to run a lot slower than my now 6 year old desktop PC. Anyone know how to squash these - or at least get them to run in idle time rather than when I'm trying to work?

I completely disabled Defender which got rid of 'Antimalware Service Executable' & helped a bit, but obviously leaves my computer unprotected. Ideally I'd like a less drastic solution.

Both essential services, but shouldn't be causing massive start up delays to the extent of what you have suggested. I feel that there will be an underlying issue but it's not something where I can simply say "do this to solve it" I'm afraid.

As @number9 says, install an av programme. Avast is a good free one, Kaspersky is a good paid for one. For Kaspersky try somewhere like Amazon as it is cheaper from them than from Kaspersky themselves (usually)
