The Post House, Stafford - Mexican Night

i loves me some mexican food, so naturally my first choice for a birthday feed was the mexican night at the post house in stafford..

there are approx. 15 of us going tonight, so i will report back.. none of us in attendance have ever been before, narvana usually being our default birthday venue of choice, so they've got a lot to live up to!

i just don't know what to have:

i can't help but be drawn to the mahoosive burger, but part of me is saying "Don't have a burger, you can get that anywhere - choose something you wouldn't cook at home!".. but then another part of me is screaming "BUT IT'S A MASSIVE DIRTY BURGER AND I WANT IT IN ME!!" :xd:

Yeah, it was great! There were about 15 of us and everyone really enjoyed the food. I'll write up a bit more when I'm not so busy.

...and even though it was me who asked whether they could offer an alternative to the tequila sharing board, what with Tuesdays being school nights, that's exactly what I went for!

yeah, soz for not replying earlier - i've been working like a japanese prisoner of war recently.. but a happy one! :v:

as andreas says, we really did have a brilliant night.. i'll try and summarise briefly (although we all know "brief" isn't really within my remit lol):

walked into the building.. immediately struck by how big and lovely it is.. it felt not dissimilar to walking into the lobby of a very posh hotel, except we were greeted by a lovely, smiley barmaid who looked eager to help.. i said we had a table booked, and she directed us upstairs..

upstairs we went, and were met by a very smart looking chap, who introduced himself as the manager and asked how he could help.. when i said it was our first visit, he couldn't help but enthuse about the place - it was great to hear someone who clearly has such passion for what he does/where he works.. he offered to give us a quick tour, but i didn't want to take him away from patrons (it was already quite busy, despite only being 18:30) so said we would have a look round ourselves..

and look round we did.. the place seems to go on and on and on (much like ariston)! every time i thought we had found the end of the building, a new doorway led to a new area/bar, each one beautifully styled and very new/contemporary looking.. the downstairs bar has a fantastic array of whisky & spirits.. including remy martin and dom perignon, for those who want to emulate p diddy, but make sure you bring plenty of benjamins with you cos i doubt they come cheap ;)

we had a few beers, then went upstairs again to take our seats at our table.. since we had quite a large party (15 people), we had been given the VIP room, which was a nice little bonus.. here it is, in patented Andreas Rex Drunk-o-Vision:

the manager chap we spoke to previously came in and enthusiastically told us about the evening - what our food and drink options were, what he recommended, etc.. as andreas said above, we all went in with no intention of having tequila on a school night, but that went out the window and we all got stuck in lol.. some of the ladies had wine (red/white/rose), which was very nice and received very favourably, but a fair amount of tequila went round the table! two varieties were provided - silver (i.e. clear) and gold tequila.. both were presented as several shot glasses on a rustic looking wooden tray, with the former coming with a pile of sea salt & slices of lime, and the latter with a pile of cinnamon & slices of orange.. i had several of each, and very nice they were too.. surprisingly easy on the palate as well, so i dare say it was of a slightly higher quality than your typical bargain booze "paint stripper" variety!

the food was fantastic.. the starter was nachos with cheese & jalapenos on top (which were easily picked off, if you're a big girl's blouse), served with 3 different dips - salsa, sour cream, and guacamole.. all of these were gorgeous - the guacamole especially (and this is coming from someone who doesn't normally like guacamole)!

everyone had different mains, and everyone really enjoyed them.. i had a chilli burger, which i can honestly say was up there as one of the best burgers i've ever had.. ms. db had pollo con chorizo - chicken, chorizo, peppers, chilli, chickpeas, rice, etc.. quite spicy, actually! very nice indeed.. several people had fajitas, which were lovely - although not as spicy as some would have liked.. that was the only criticism i heard all night, though - overall, the food was of an incredibly high standard..

the whole time this was going on, the staff were beavering about, attending to our every whim, without being intrusive.. in fact, they were so adept and whipping in and out without getting underfoot that a couple of times someone got up to go to the loo, only to come back to find that someone had tidied their area and refolded their napkin, but no-one had noticed anyone doing it! we really were very impressed with all the staff - cannot compliment them enough..

after such an opulent evening, we were expecting a pretty hefty bill - although by this stage we were several tequilas deep and (quite literally) in high spirits, so weren't that fussed as we were happy to pay a decent amount for such a lovely night.. imagine our surprise, then, when the bill came to less than £20 a head! considerably less, in fact.. bearing in mind that we had all had a 2 course meal, a glass of wine, plus several tequilas and a few beers between us, and that really is astounding.. in actual fact, i think it was only about £16 a head, but we all chucked a twenty in so that they got a good tip - i mean, how often do you go out and spend less than £20 a head?? it seemed a crime not to leave that much..

so yeah, sorry for the ramble, but i cannot speak highly enough of the place..

tl; dr = the post house mexican night is amazing, you must go.. i can't wait to see what else the post house has to offer :rich:

edit: shit, i've just thought - some of us had puddings as well!! so that £16 a head is even more ridiculous, now i think about it:

you can just about see the corner of one of the tequila platters in the top-left of that pic, showing the mound of cinnamon i previously mentioned ;)
