Can't say I've ever seen this open, why was it closed?

You used to be able to drive down to the car park but, as you might expect, people abused the fact it was isolated, for drugs and dogging purposes.

I do love the "ecology" argument. When I used to regularly mountain bike over the chase they went and loosened up all the ground to make some singletrack parts we rode unrideable and put signs up about it being a sensitive area. I went walking over there a while after and all the ground was chewed up and the trees lopped down. Pretty sure that does more damage than a few mountain bikes.

Oh and they're always spraying herbicides on the bracken or ripping up the heather. Area of outstanding natural beauty? nah!

Are you being serious?

Well, what is natural about an area if it is being engineered by humans? clearing areas to allow for certain butterflies to thrive etc..

Please explain what is so natural about that? are flower beds in a garden natural?

Bracken is a bit of an issue - left to its own devices, the general habitat will falter.

Not the most scientific publication, but the gist is there.

True. I get why it is done. Went over the chase earlier and I don't think I've ever seen bracken so high.

There has been quite a lot of damage to sites of importance in the area. For example cans, bottles and rubbish thrown into somewhere where they are trying to reintroduce native crayfish, damage to ancient oaks caused by fires and barbecues, more damage to ancient oaks caused by a few people on bikes who are not satisfied by being able to ride on the bridle way through Brocton Coppice but who have been digging out pits & ridges as jumps & damaging tree roots, barbecue related fires ...

These new much heavier and powerful electric mountain bikes won't be helping there. Getting to be like motorbikes now. They're ridden by people who are more than capable of riding a normal one, they just want to go faster.
