The Tap Bar & Restaurant - the old Tap and Spile.

I was surprised that a Steak House opened in that location and difficulties with parking must have been one of its biggest challenges.
Coincidently only this morning I was remembering a wonderful lunchtime seeing Lindisfarne perform there as the Cottage by the Brook reopened as the Tap and Spile on 14th July 1994.

Extremely sad to see The Tap going under. One of the best independent food places in town. Always had great meals there including Christmas dinner 2 years ago. It is such a shame they couldn't hang-on as there seems to be plenty of demand now things have opened back up. Hopefully this might be an effort to wipe the slate clean & they will come back as The Tap (2021) (plenty of companies have done it before). Interesting fact for @Mudgie, I found out my Uncle & Aunt used to keep The Tap & Spile in the 70s. Apparently I went to visit them there in 1977 however, I don't recall much about is as I was only 2 months old at the time!.

I didn't use the cottage by the Brook during the 1970s as it only had keg beer.
I know it from being run by Peter and Leslie Boote, 1983 to '89, Andy and Fiona Mizzi, 1994 to '95, and Steve and Bonita Tideswell, 1998 to 2005.

I didn't know that was the Tap's previous name, you learn something everyday. The old boy is still around, next time I see him I'll tell him that his keg beer was so crap they had to re-name the pub after he left Ha Ha!

It was the Cottage by the Brook, officially.

But, as it had quite a notable clientele from the sub-continent in those days, it was widely known as the Cottage by the Ganges.

We went last night. I did wonder why the menu had shrunk a bit, just thought it was down to supply issues. That said the food, drink & service were spot on as usual. Plenty of folks in there too.
