Traffic Lights on J14 M6

Been round J14 roundabout for first time since lights went in - no one has mentioned that it has only been partially signalised. There are only lights on the M6 off slips and a set of lights on the roundabout before each off slip. The A34 and A5013 entrances are still normal give ways.

You can always tell when a new road junction or set of lights is a bad idea when there are a large amount of skid marks left on the road surface. Quite scary that some of them continue across the white line and into the junction.
All that skid marks show is that someone has braked very heavily, it proves nothing else.

the last green light before creswell has been hit by something. can barely see the light! wonder if someone took out their frustation on it...
The cowl on the green light has been straightened out, but it's been hit again - and the red light this time, too. I imagine that it will have been struck by a goods vehicle.

The cowls are supposed to stop the drivers on the other route from seeing when the lights are about to change and running them, I presume - or being confused by red and green lights in close proximity.

I've no problem with the lights being on at peak times to help manage the congestion, but at night they hamper the flow of traffic and are just there sapping even more electricity.

The real issue is one of too much traffic. The energy consumption of some traffic lights compared to all the traffic is very very small.

In the not too distant future hard shoulder running / Active Traffic Management is going to effectively make a 4 lane M6 past Stafford. As extra road capacity generates more traffic it will put more traffic through the junctions (as well as Stafford). So its not unreasonable to expect J14 amongst others to get even busier.

I have passed through the junction ten times - been stopped on nine of those - and on seven of those there has been no traffic on the 'green route' - on the twice that there was, we could both have easily merged seamlessly.

I have no objection to improvements, but this set-up seems worse than pointless most of the time. If they are necessary at certain times, then the process of instituting part-time signals is twentieth century technology.

Unless the worldwide ( London and the US ) depression moves in as a cold front bringing an alltime low did you know the IRA tried to blow up and electricity pylon next to the M6 once but in general of course you are right as all fields will become roads or roads leading to roads amen one day eventually if we as a sovereign gold coinage nation can afford the fright at the pumps punctuation see me after school

Went through this morning and the lights on the roundabout weren't showing anything at all, but the lights on the northbound slip-road were showing red - and had been for some time, judging by the queue. I proceeded gingerly. It seemed OK in the other direction a hour later.

When we got off the Southbound sliproad last week, the lights were only staying on green for a couple of seconds each time and then ages on red. Luckily it was mid-morning and not too much of a build up as it was only allowing one or two vehicles to go at a time.

Two of the cowls are completely missing now. That post is fairly close to the curb.

I really can't see the point of these... OK they may improve things slightly for 20 mins at the rush hour but for the other 1420 mins each day they are a PITA

Shame they can't extend that aversion to pedestrian crossings within 100 yards of each other, potholes, cycle lanes that don't join up, putting large retail developments where they cause traffic mayhem and pointless speedhumps.

Seriously, I do like Stafford but compared to other places I've lived I feel like someone out there really hates cars!

I can't help but wonder if the people in charge have been to one too many traffic management conferences sponsored by traffic light manufacturers...

Doesn't really explain how they choose the locations for new sets though - Brocton crossroads (highlighted in another thread) is in serious need of works - a read of the facebook group suggests that there isn't room for a roundabout (according to SCC Highways), yet that same Highways doesn't want to spend money on traffic lights either. In other locations, they are keen to install lights and signalled pedestrian crossings that don't seem to be entirely necessary, or even counter-productive!

For some reason though, the council / highways seem to have an aversion to part-time signals around Stafford.
Yesterday afternoon I was heading out of Stafford on the A34. There must have been a powercut or something as the traffic lights by Lloyds Bank, the lights at The Hough and the lights at the junction with St Leonard's Ave were all out of action. Yet somehow traffic was moving much more fluidly than usual in all directions, with no queues. Bliss!

Bring on part-time lights.
