I do remember that incident. I was living on Sheridan St at the time and distinctly remember the helicopters flying overhead. :(

A tragic consequence of introducing something new without properly informing those who were expected to use it. The book 'The Hixon Railway Disaster' by Richard Westwood is a sobering read. BR's plans for AHB Level Crossings were downright lethal. It took Hixon to see improvements made that should have always been part of the design.

A similar situation at Colwich Junction in 1986 really. BR introduced changes to the signalling approaching the junction without ensuring that the train drivers were thoroughly briefed on it,

@LeeA ,
Would that be the Richard Westwood who is the Managing Director of the Marston's Beer Company ( and who went to secondary school with my wife ) ?

And at Cheadle Hulme ( where my grandparents lived ) in 1964 with the driver not properly notified of the temporary speed restriction.

If that's the 'Lollipop Special' crash I lost a first cousin there. Devastated her family. :(
