My daughter's done a fair bit of travelling over the last eight or nine years. Always hosteling, mostly Australia and New Zealand, but also the Far East and South America. She's currently living in Vancouver, half way through a two-year work visa.

It depends, of course, on their particular interests.

BC is an amazing place , both in the summer and winter

But outside the large cities there can be a bit of small town attitude

Nothing hostile, just not always that sophisticated, unless you head for the ski resorts . However, Nelson and Vancouver Island are worth seeking out.

Even if they do not intend crossing into the US it maybe useful to get an ESTA to enable them to fly around via a US airport. You need one even if you never intend to enter the US itself, but want to connect a flight, say in Portland, to save money. I'd also recommend anyone travelling to South America to get one too. It's amazing how many less expensive flights go through US airports. It's a useful tool in case plans have to change at short notice.

Montreal Vancouver and Quebec will feel more familiar

If it's a big trip, Newfoundland can be spectacular, if a little unsophisticated

Take mozzi spray or thermal knickers

Or both

Wow that's the most informative post without the need of translation I've seen you post and don't get me wrong I do enjoy the content of most of your posts once I've managed to work them out :)

If meeting anybody with a North American accent anywhere else in the world, always ask them if they're Canadian - it's a win/win situation, whichever they are.

I think Tilly summed it up nicely, east of Alberta its unbelievable flat and the road are straight. Halifax and Prince Edward Island are the best options for the east coast, Calgary and rockies are spectacular and the drive up the Alaskan Highway is equally spectacular.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness...

If you are asking about travel in Canada in particular, one can be of no help whatsoever.

Although i have actually briefly been to the Canadian side of Niagara, Toronto, and Thousand Islands - though this was when i was bairnish, and curated by wonderful parents.

When i was what i assume is more your son's age, i spent some months in South America - mostly in Peru, but also elsewhere - and it was the best thing i ever did to myself.

My only real regret is that i will never eat ceviche anywhere near that good again.

Now i am here, but i know exactly how i got here, so i have that going for me.
