Having heard about it a few times recently, I have just joined twitter.com. Does anyone else use it?

Whats it for?!?
It is a simple thing, really.

From Wikipedia "Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via short message service, instant messaging, email, or an application such as Twitterrific."

Who knows - it may actually turn out to be a useful social tool, or at very least, a bit of a giggle.

I am very much looking forward to Zyco's future group texting service. Looks like a very useful tool.

As soon as unlimited internet data volume over an Orange mobile becomes free (T-Mobile customers are already massively ahead of the game, I understand) I shall be checking out Fring, which is an application to unify IMs, although, I do wonder where all this will lead - will we soon need software to unify all of the different applications which unify all of the other applications, and so on...

Just joined twitter 12 minutes ago and i'm extremely impressed!!

For the cost of just a text (which are free anyway on my mobile phone plan) I can update my twitter page instantly with where I am, what i'm doing etc.
Now my family and closest mates can see at a glance what i've been up to - providing of course that i remember to send twitter texts off my phone!

I also like that you can choose to protect your updates, which essentially means that people who choose to join you for your twitter updates need your permission before they can follow what you're up to.

So far so good. I can see this taking off in a big way!!!
:)
No doubt my mum will check out my twitter each day, see where I've been, know how my chickens are doing, how many eggs they've laid, what my plans are etc. AND I BET SHE STILL CALLS ME!!! arghhhhhh

Not sold on it myself. Do you really want everyone to know what you're doing and where you've been? Isn't that what the forum is for?

Quite right, privacy is on the decline these days. To be telling the world and his wife what pattern you have on your bog roll or what you spent your giro on is beyond me......

Again guys, if you read properly.. you can set your page to private updates allowing ONLY the people you wish to read it. Used in the right way it's good for keeping your family and direct friends in touch and not the "whole world". Used without the private updates turned on I agree would be stupid.

Another good use could be (updates on for everyone to read) using it as a LATEST INFO page on your website where you could add stuff instantly by text without being near your PC. A school could use it for telling parents about events / closures / training days for example - without needing to know anything more than how to send a text message!

Anybody got any other good use suggestions? I'd be keen to hear your idea's

Have been on this for a while (bet you can guess my user name). It is useful for following a particular subject or industry in real time. Google are in talks to buy twitter and use it as a sort of 'discovery engine'. So they obviously place some value on it. I'll agree this isn't for everyone, but I have found it incredibly useful for networking and keeping events in real time. Case and point The Pirate Bay Trial. There was a live feed from the courtroom by the actual defendants.

One of the most inspired uses I thought was the http://twitter.com/Marsphoenix. Yes NASA setup a twitter feed for the Lander and it tweeted information in real-time, as well as images and videos.
Another interesting Hack I have seen used with this was some bright spark hooked it up to his electricity meter and had it tweet how much power he was using on a regular basis.

Try to steer away from the thing this is mostly used for which I'll completely agree is shit. Who cares if Bethen in Ohio has just got on the bus? Not me!! However the uses I have mentioned before are just the beginning; you can also find allot a famous comedians on there.

Stephen Fry particularly worth following.

Oh the (rare, but occasionally exceptional) joys of Twitter. Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX)--the ranking member on the House Energy & Commerce Committee--says (tweets?) "I seemed [sic] to have baffled the Energy Sec with basic question - Where does oil come from?"

He's referring to Nobel prize winning Energy Secretary Steve Chu, and this exchange.

Clicks for tricks: Twitter's first brothel?

House of Divine in glamorous Milton Keynes tweeted to say that Lucia and Karol were working on Sunday while another message offered a "Twitter Discount". The operation has been exposed in The Sun newspaper, which trumpets: "A BROTHEL is touting its services via social networking site TWITTER."

Since "adult services" have previously managed to use other communications systems -- postal services, telephones, shop windows, email, the web, advertisements in tabloid newspapers -- this shouldn't come as a huge surprise, but brothel stories are probably good for raising your circulation (fnar fnar).

"House of Divine" advertises which girls are on duty each day - and issues "special offers" to punters' mobile phones.

The firm, based in Milton Keynes, Bucks, also sends appeals for working girls to enlist.

Lib-Dem MP Julia Goldsworthy labelled the brothel's use of Twitter "cynical and inappropriate" . Twitter declined to comment yesterday.

I use it in a similar way to this - Our Course appears on lots of social networks and web 2.0 stuff (facebook, Myspace, the students Ning Network, a forum, a tumblr blog, a VLE ) and updating them all is a real pain,

So the feed from the twitter is pulled out and they all have a veneer of being updated, while in fact I only have to update one thing - and it's very quick to do so.

And on the other side a lot of games companies are following my twitter feed and are showing interest in our course and out students.

I went to the 4iP Launch with work back in October and everyone was Twitter-ing (sic) with each other there. I rember when these conference events used to be about :pint: , :munch: and :heyhey: .

I did, however, find out about this there: http://landshare.channel4.com/ which was interesting for me. Just too damn old I guess...
