Is this the cat that wasn't yours? You neutered and chipped him in the space of a week?

Not having a cat neutered is irresponsible - there are too many cats in shelters in need of a home without people letting their cats create yet more.

1. Magic the cat has returned to us.
2. He was on the streets for at least a week and was starving.
3. He was not chipped and not castrated.
4. His previous owners obviously didn't care for him properly.
5. All attempts possible made to see if he had been reported missing. Cats protection, vets, Sadpals etc.
6. Sought advice from vet before neutering & chipping.

Be responsible if you keep pets.

I don't "steal" anything

Read what Lisapearce has put, the cat was on the streets for at least a week and was starving, what was she supposed do? Shut the door on the poor thing, let it die? possibly get run over? We found a cat up on the common bridge 20+ yrs ago,no-one in the streets close by knew whos he was,or even offered take him in. We kept him for over 10yrs,he was loved and never wanted for food or attention.

Imagine if he has gone back to his previous home. The owner will get a shock. LOL

Not quite sure I know what a magic the cat looks like though. Is it perhaps black and white and likes to mark its territory? We have one round here that's taken to p*ssing up my front door. When I caught the little b*gger swaggering down my drive the other night I sent him packing only for him to stop half way down my drive and defiantly p*ss up my car. I really hope his name is now magic.

You've done the right thing - glad you've given him a home.

Totally agree - the ideal solution would be to find the owners, but Lisapearce has tried to do that, and failing to find them, has done the best thing in my opinion.

How long are you supposed to leave a starving animal before you make a decision? And even then, what options are there?

Send it to a shelter - no known owner so probably be killed?
Take it in yourself
Leave it to starve

An ex of mine had a cat adopt her, just started turning up one day and hanging out with the other 2. After a few weeks it never left again, seemed at home and was happier at hers I guess.

Animal shelters don't put healthy animals to sleep, but some struggle with the numbers of animals they have to re-home. If you can give the cat a home rather than send it to a shelter then that's preferable in my mind.

Surely there is a tipping point where there is not enough money to support the cats?
Animal shelters do not put healthy animals to sleep. I rather suspect that if they did, people would not wish to donate money to them.
