Using phone abroad

:help: Not wanting to run up a massive unexpected bill on my android contract phone, which I'm taking to Majorca to send the odd text/call to son.....

If the 'mobile data' is switched off, and 'Data enabled' isn't on, does that mean I won't be getting charged any data / roaming charges at all when the phone is switched on just to call /text ? (Read that the phone can still be running updates on Apps , which would mean charges for data if not connected to a free wi-fi zone, or the free wi-fi drops out :q: )

Yes,switch off mobile data. If you have an android, it's also worth making sure your data roaming option is set to off - It's in mobile network settings, data roaming. This should mean if you accidentally forget to switch off mobile data it won't use any.

Thanks @Lucy .

So just to check (Sorry to sound so thick  ) ......Am I correct if 'roaming' comes up on my screen , it's just searching for their phone networks ?

Hubbys got one of those :D and it's also going with us....he acquired it when I changed my phone over 5 years ago . The salesman at the time called it an antique :embarrass: That old PAYG one actually worked better than my expensive contract phone when we had to ring sons uni from Spain. My expensive phone couldn't get the signal and the old cheapo one connected perfectly

Do three mobile cover the area? Get a PAYG sim from them and use it at the same rates as here if so.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Ring up whatever network you are with and see what they do for roaming packages. I went to Czech Republic last year and it cost me £12 for the four days I was there for all data and calls. Networks have enhanced their roaming packages since then as well.

When we went last year, the costs of texts on the Spanish network hubbys PAYG picked up was only 8p each .Cheaper than he was paying in the UK. The calls were also cheaper off his phone . The network I picked up was also just charging 10p a text. So didn't cost a fortune keeping in touch with son back home.

We have free wi-fi in the hotel, and most of the bars have it. So will (hopefully...if we actually get connected ) be using the free wi-fi on my tablet for websites , and the old phone with PAYG sim to message son on Whatsapp. Stick to those two and then won't run up any unexpected massive bills..
