What are we watching on TV?

'Das Boot.' New series on Sky.

When the original series Das Boot was released decades ago it was an instant hit. The series was actually edited and put on general cinema release it was so good. It showed the grim reality of submarine warfare warts an all. I've sailed and worked with a number of ex-submariners who all said it was the best submarine drama ever made.

Sadly series two a few years back was a true disappointment, as is this one. They both suffered from the same malady:

It's supposed to be about a f****** submarine, not wheeling and dealing in Berlin or espionage in Lisbon. :grr:

The Undeclared War on Channel 4. I felt a bit uneasy when I read about this, but I have to say it is rather good. Good cast, Simon Pegg in a serious part, Mark Rylance and a very intense young lady Hannah Khalique-Brown. A slow style of directing which fits the story (cyber-warfare is fast, so a counter balance is a good idea.) The 'Green Monster' gets a small mention too, which I did a bit with.
I'm hooked.

Binge watched The Undeclared War on Channel 4. (This is what happens when you haven't been out of the house in 10 days as you wonder which end of your body are your bones going to flow out of first.)
Very well done, gripping and thought provoking. (Without Aston Martins with mini-guns, exploding watches, card table shiners or ninja fights.)

Emmy award winning HBO series 'Barry.' Very black comedy on Sky in which ex combat Marine 'Barry' is making a living as a low cost hitman. On a job in LA he gets involved with an acting class ... and gets the bug.
Might sound a bit daft but throw in Chechen gangsters, Bolivian gangsters and some Burmese Buddhist gangsters and you get a completely off the wall story. It is funny/sad but the violence in it has quite a hard edge to it. It really is completely off the wall.

I'd love to have been there when they shot this sequence ... as for the Freeway chase scene, I simply don't know how they did it, short of confiscating the road for a few hours. It looks bloody dangerous to me.

250,000th poster!
'Worlds most scenic railway journeys', narrated by Bill Nighy.

Fascinating... Just my kind of programme, they just need a cooking section at each stop & I'd be in TV heaven.

I can't believe there are only five episodes of Better Call Saul left, I'm going to miss this show so much!
