What to do with an unused domain/web space?

i have a couple of domains that i bought for various reasons (testing/vanity/etc.) that aren't really doing anything.. has anyone got any suggestions for fun, interesting, or (heaven forbid) useful things to do with them? for example, any interesting PHP software/scripts i could install to make them do something daft/entertaining, rather than just sitting there stagnating?

i know there are quite a few web developers & boffins on here - do you have any personal web sites that you use in a similar vein?

Oh I wish I knew. I've got loads too. The ones I have are pretty specific to either people with my surname, a certain village in Lancashire, or people who remember old TV series.
I did repurpose recondite-computers.co.uk (the ficticional makers of "Box" from Star Cops) to handle wikis about kit that nobody really cares about anymore (but that server is down now due to a power fault in the house). Gotta fix that.

Post a list of what you have, and I'm sure we can come up with stuff.

i'd rather not list them here, as some contain personal information as with yours.. but, for example, i registered dirtybobby.com many moons ago, just for shits & giggles, but have done bugger all with it..

rather than coming up with ideas based on the domain name, this thread was more about what software/PHP/etc. is out there that is fun to muck about with? there are your two obvious ones - wordpress, and forum software - but i was wondering what else is available? portal software, pinterest/digg style scripts, hot-or-not style "image wars" doobries, etc..

basically, i'm not a web developer, so i guess i don't really know what is out there to muck about with.. was looking for inspiration, really!

surely no-one would ever see them if there's no content to view, though? lol..

there's bound to be a "games arcade" script or something out there, that allows you to play asteroids/tetris/snake/that kind of thing.. might see if i can find something like that.. or maybe see if there's something that can pull info from twitter/facebook/flickr/other social platforms and setup a central repository for.. erm... something lol..

look, i told you i need inspiration :haw:

I'm recovering from getting my hosting bill today. Yikes. There were domains on it that I'd forgotten that I had.

I've got the PHP for a hotornot clone somewhere on one of my old harddrives. Your other options include bullcrap wikis, domain forwarding and webmail (if you can support it, otherwise email forwarding), shonky website popularity rankings, or just pretending to be a web design company and setting up a holding page :)

Have a mess with one of the phpnuke scripts you can get arcade plugins for some of them.

If you do fancy a mess around with phpnuke go here http://www.clanthemes.com/ have a look at some of the plugins and what version of nuke they support, it might be cool to have a blast on space invaders against some of you ladies and gents on here :)

Interesting.. I had a quick look at this earlier, looks like it could be fun.. I'll try and remember to check it out in detail tomorrow!

I actually Did away with my hosting space earlier last month. Since I was using blogger to host my blog anyway then it was just going spare, and costing me money with it. I've kept my domain though, 13 years I've had a blog under that address.

Just put a Wordpress blog on one for now and post every day about anything you have done that day or anything random that makes you laugh.
If you are not sure what content to put on there you could always add a plugin like "RSS Poster" (there is a free version) and get it to auto post from some RSS feeds from your fav site..
Also if you wanted a Wordpress based (free, again) forum you could get the "Simple: press" plugin for that as well...
