Here's an alternative lifestyle choice; become a FREEGAN! Don't think it's something i'll be getting into, though Sainsbury's is just over the road..

ps. rex, one of the lasses in my office says that safeway (where she used to work) had a food only bin- maybe you should have a peek round sainsburys and see if you can find that one.

I used to work with a guy that went to college with a Freegan, except he didn't rummage through supermarket bins. He used to go to the local open air market and pick up what the fruit n vegs stalls left on the floor. Chap was a vegan too - somewhat limiting his intake. I should imagine he was somewhat on the thin side what with the low calorie intake and the associated side effects of floor food.

My very first job as a smaller FlamingRed was in a bakery. At the end of the day all of the unsold but perfectly good food had to be put out in the trash. Company orders. Staff not allowed to have and we were not allowed to give it away. It was in an area that is somewhat poorer than some - so the manageress put the word out that there was food in the bins and we double bagged everything, made sure it was sealed and laid it in the bins so as not to squash it. The bread and cake fairies were most appreciative.

I'd be quite happy to do this, I've got an immune system and I'm not afraid to use it.
I'd have to be starving, though.

I'm not sure on this. If they can afford to buy the food but don't feel they wantto support Supermarkets then don't buy food from them. There are plenty of independent suppliers, veg box schemes, local shops they could support instead. I don't agree with food waste, I try and waste as little as possible, but there are better ways to act against supermarkets.

Sound like a bunch of pikeys who can't be arsed to buy food to me.

If it was out of financial need, then fair enough, but admit it at least.

Conscience my arse. More like a con science.

Absolutely. There are marvellous things called gardens and allotments so grow your own. Fresh produce always seems better at farm shops. Why the bin rooting?

I worked at Reynolds for a stint, and so was used to walking around Stafford in the wee small hours. You'll often find drunken revellers weeing in bins (never leave your recycling box out over night if you live near a pub). Ergh.
