Where is the best chippy in Stafford?

Winding down towards a holiday, day off, pottering about...so I stopped off at the Eccleshall chippy. Cannot say I was impressed, main reason (there were others, but not related to the quality of the food, more attitude and demeanour) being that the veggie item I asked for was bunged in the microwave for a coupe of minutes, then, as I discovered when I got home, wrapped up and delivered still sealed in its plastic wrapper. Result not dissimilar to a soggy, sweating, limp and singularly unappetising first aid bandage. And there was a bit of a taste of mould in a few mouthfuls, enough for me to check the date on the thoughtfully-provided packaging. Yuck, and will not be going there again. I mean, how hard would it have been to have taken the thing out of its wrapper and at least tried to make it look appetising? Shows a degree of contempt for your customers, imo, to not give a toss to that extent.

As a for example of how things can be done if you care about your profession, the chippy in Church Stretton. Same order - not too keen on fish - took several minutes to prepare, but what I got was a cheesy oniony thing that had been heated in an oven for five minutes or so - crispy, delicious.

Do you mean Bodmin Ave ? I've not tried it for 7 yrs as whilst I will aways give places a few chances I still found it was poor, poor, poor every single time so vowed not to go back. Anyone else saying this is a good chippie now then? I might give it a try if so. Who owns it now/does the frying then?
Yes you should defo give Weeping Cross chippy a try now.

Best chippy for me is definitely Weeping Cross! (Bodmin Avenue). New partnership with the owner and his son-in-law, who seems to be there most of the time now. Friendly, polite and efficient staff. Its always busy with queues often out the door. Had a great lunchtime special the other day, a massive haddock (hanging over the box), chips n peas for a fiver!!! Fresh & Delicious! :) Also, bought a 10p fork as the chippy donates the money to Katherine House Hospice, which is brilliant! :)

I might give it a try then . Anyone else agree Bodmin Ave chippie has improved and worth going to?

I cannot disagree more. We have given it 3 attempts and each attempt results in a day spent on the toilet next day. It is our local so want it to be good but sadly it is not. Last visit was the end of August and that was it for us.

Erm that's worrying. So one for and one against. Any more views on Weeping Cross Chippie?

Rising Brook chippy is nice mostly, Stafford Chippy is nice for most things except there chips and anything battered, but they do deliver.

and now you can add me as a third in the "for" category.. my favourite in stafford is the one on westway, but every time i've had them from weeping cross i've been really impressed.. as @LoveAll says, the only downside is that there are often queues literally out the door, because it is so popular.. last time i had stuff from there was about a month ago, and it was lovely and really good value.. "mini" fish that can feed two people, nice crispy batter, etc..

so yeah, i'd defo say give them a try again if you're round that way, @Princedomino :)

Thanks db for correcting me as yes I've missed counting the first comment a few posts back. Yes I'll give it a try then and see how it goes. Cheers. :)

called in to west way chippy again last night. had chicken tikka and chips (normal portion for 2 of us). again chips were nice, not as many as the chips only portion we had 2 weeks ago, but that's cos there was loads of chicken filling the poly tray. chicken was a deep red colour and spicier than I normally get, it was cooked well and moist. might be a bit greasy for some, as there was a bit left in the tray afterwards, but for me, it was the best I've had in a long time. mrs no.1 (I daren't say mrs no.9 in case she reads this) doesn't like it as spicy.
more for me next time :)
i'll happily go there again every couple of weeks.

If you're ever passing, the one in Gnosall is good. One portion of fish and chips is easily enough for 2 as well.

I have been informed there is an amazing one in Newport, but have yet to test out.

1st Eccleshall
2nd Stone Road ( Northern Lights )
3rd Rising Brook
4th Britannia ( First Ave )
