I remember the red one, quite apart from no longer being available i don't think he could've helped with this;

Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks, wikis, blogs, forums and any other web forms to submit spam links to the web forms it finds. These spambots often use OCR technology to bypass CAPTCHAs present.
I was kind of looking for layman's terms

It's a thing what hunts around for email addresses that can be 'stolen' and used to send out spam - and possibly for other scams, as well. - etc.

OCR is optical character recognition so that it can 'read' text that may not be in an ASCII-type numerical code form and CAPTCHA is those squiggly writing things that you sometimes have to read and copy to 'prove' that you are a real human.

Malwarebytes really is "top dog" at removing the very worst threats at the moment. Install it and run a full scan... I'd be surprised if it finds nothing at all on your system... especially as you've only been relying on Avira or AVG.

Let me know how you get on. www.malwarebytes.org for the download
If I download this and run a full scan, would I have to dis-able Norton before I do it,or do they run side-by-side?

(Just had to get moderators of a footie forum to delete a post that STUPID hubby had put on....had an e-mailed picture displaying both our names,e-mail addresses etc. No wonder we are having problems with our details whizzing around the world for all to see!)

Malwarebytes SHOULD run side by side with any anti-virus. If my suspicions are correct, you'll probably find that you'll have some viruses it removes which Norton hasn't even picked up on.... in which case that's another reason to get rid of Norton (aswell as it making your computer rum slower than me gran!)

Let us know how you get on :)

Just downloaded the malwarebytes and did full system scan.

Detected 1 Trojan Download and got rid of it.

Thanks - will have to look at the Anti-virus options available on this thread now. Norton expires in a couple of months anyway so will definitely be using another system.

Thanks wmrcomputers , loaded up a lot quicker this time anyway :)

Would I have to have an Anti-virus system running as well ,or would the Malwarebytes system be enough on it's own,if I purchased the full package.

I'm supposed to have Windows and Virgin protection available on here . Do you think they would be strong enough considering I've had problems with quite a few viruses ?

I don't rate virgin media's anti-virus product personally.

As for the malwarebytes one, they claim you should still use an anti-virus product with it, but so far I haven't discovered anything it can't deal with. Saying that it still doesn't hurt to install either AVG free or Avast or similar.

Un-install Norton before it even expires. 1. It's made awkward to get rid of after it expires (a crafty way of getting you to renew I think), and 2. You will seriously see some changes with speed.

Thanks for the advice. I'd better make sure it isn't set to renew automatically as well. We have always been told that Norton was 'A must have' in the past. Didn't realise that it was grinding down my PC
That will explain why it was working faster when I was mistakenly using it in safe mode, without any protection on at all. Hadn't got Norton to slow it down!

Thanks for all your advice. My computer is now running a lot faster, with AVG and Malwarebytes installed.

I downloaded AVAST and my computer didn't like it one bit and I couldn't get into anything for a couple of hours. Malwarebytes was throwing up all sorts of warnings about a bad site having been downloaded!
I soon as I could get back in again,I un-installed AVAST straight away.

After un-installing Norton (Norton not a happy bunny and made it a long & frustrating process!) we successfully downloaded the free AVG and it is now running a hell of a lot faster.

There is one 'Symantec' file on our PC that ,when we came to un-install,was saying that we need that file left on for PC to function properly???? I thought all the Symantec files were part of Norton.Think it's OK to get rid of it?

At work, my Trend Micro Antivirus 2010 has started playing up recently. I will be typing an email, and randomly (every couple of minutes or so) Thunderbird (and Seamonkey) both stop responding for about 20 seconds. I have to sit and wait there while the processor churns away, and then it suddenly kicks back in and I can continue typing again. Really annoying!

Anyway, I contacted Trend for support, and after a few rounds of email tennis they are putting the blame on Thunderbird and Seamonkey. Now, I exited Trend Antivirus and I have not had this problem ever since. Weird huh?

So I've now uninstalled it and have installed BitDefender. There seem to be lots of reviews this year saying that it is the best antivirus (obviously better partnered with MalwareBytes, as recommended by wmr). Others that seem to be on a par with this are Panda Cloud and Kaspersky.
I've now downloaded it and it is working fine with my email programmes. I even had a phone call shortly after from a bloke who gave me 90 days free trial and a chance to sell it at reseller prices :)

So if anyone's interested in buying BitDefender for their business, give me a PM and I will see if I can get you a good deal!

Not had chance to play with bitdefender but have heard similar good reviews, so please keep us updated on issues such as ability and speed etc.
