Why have the last 3 televisions (CRT) I have owned not shown the whole of the screen horizontally when watching terrestrial/Virgin/Sky tele????

"Help please!" I've put up with this for some years now and I think it's time to change this.

What screen ratio were they?

TV programmes are broadcast in 16:9 format. Maybe the TVs were 4:3 format?

It would appear that my tele has 14:9 and 16:9 options on the remote...and comes up on the screen?
