Windows 10 observations

Anyone suggest going up to 10?
...and it not being painful?

... what I need it for -
(keeping an eye on emails, browsing, some storing, not much uploading or downloading, hooked up to a printer/scanner 'an that)
For your average Joe, like myself and, from the above description, yourself, you will notice no disruption to your activities.

It's one of those things, isn't it? You know you're going to have to do it sometime or other, might as well leave it until you have to. It really makes no difference whatsoever whether it is what you now have, or if it is a new machine - either way it will be loaded with 10 eventually. The rub is, do you need a new machine or not?

I had Windows 10 installed on this thing by the inestimable @wmrcomputers as part and parcel of him also generally sorting out my shizz, so i would definitely recommend just handing what you currently have over to him to get it all sorted and see how it all goes.

He's a proper good sort, so will be better able to advise whether the splashing of cash on a new machine will be better than just making your old one as new.

Honestly, this is good advice.

What terribly good advise young man.

Thankyou for the glowing reference @Withnail

@1JKz - the best advice I can give is to think about what specific programs you use that are not part of windows and whether you have the discs to reinstall them or not first. If you have any programs you would be unable to reinstall then you will be better just running the windows 10 upgrade and keep your fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly. If there's nothing you can't afford to lose (other than pictures and documents etc. which I always back up first), then it would be massively beneficial to have it done as a clean install as withnail has suggested above. Overall, it's a good operating system - much better than 8 or 8.1.

I may be round to you (again) to sort this next laptop out then, wmr!

I've finally got the 1703 update to install properly, after several attempts. Things seem largely the same afterwards, but I noted that it claimed to have the means to Search your pictures for you. I elected to enable this and discovered that it takes around ten seconds to assess each picture and, presumably, attach some sort of tags to it.

It has finally finished doing this and I have had a try at it. It's not too bad at guessing what the picture is portraying, and a bit more practice might make me better at guessing what it has guessed that the picture might be.

If your pictures are stored on Google photos, it's very good at doing this.

Read the second half of Harari's Homo Deus, you'll see where all of this is going.

I've been getting some static from a Shipping site I visit about the current update of Windows 10 Version 2004 (technically that's April 2020 although it's running a bit late on release.) I was just wondering if anybody here have had any problems.

Personally I've upgraded all my machines including the laptop without any problem. :)

The machine I'm using now and for most internet browsing is 10 years old, but works via an Intel I7 CPU. It is still original apart from an upgraded CPU cooler and video card and the mechanical hard drive replaced with a Solid State Drive (SSD.) I use this because since Window 10 came out some years back I've been using the Microsoft voluntary insider ring testing new pre-release builds of Windows 10 for Microsoft. (It used Windows 7 originally.) It's currently running Version 2004 build 19645.1 and the new version of Edge Version 83.0.478.50. Microsoft have been test releasing a build a week on the test ring as of late.

All my machines are 64 bit. I can't remember when I last had a 32 bit machine, not since I retired that's for sure. (The school had them, we managed to brush them away.)

The reports I'm getting from shipmates are various and talk of blue screens of death, missing files, and complete failure to boot. I've no details of their machines though (the first thing you should state when you're asking for advice) but from my discussions with them, most of their problems seem to be associated with old hard drives. I'm wondering if they've prepared them properly when upgrading. A new version/build of the operating system is not a trivial update.

Anyway since the 2004 Windows 10 is currently updating all over the world, I just thought it was worth a mention.

I've done one machine - and it took forever...

I haven't seen any problems yet, just unnecessary cosmetic changes.

This one is still churning away at it...

There is a third machine that I hold 'in reserve' that had a recent meltdown necessitating a reset, but I'm not aware that it had attempted a 2004 update at that stage.

As I was reading your post this machine advised me Preview build 20150.1000 is ready to download and install ...

I'll let it run in now I think as we had another afternoon of thunderstorms today and I don't want the power going off in mid-update tomorrow. I'll time how long it'll take but it's usually a couple of hours on this machine. (Core I7, 8 Gigs RAM, SSD.)

I've always found the pre releases to be pretty dire and would steer clear unless it's set on a VM.
Thinking about it , this past few years I havent allowed it to be installed on a public release version until it's been proven to be stable after a few months.

There wouldn’t be much point in being a beta tester and not taking pre-releases :?:

And you don’t get previews unless you’re beta tester (which is purely voluntary.) So I’m not sure how you figure that.

I was a beta tester a while back , these days I dont have the time.
I found it very interesting and still do but these days I just need a working unit.
Maybe my post didn't come over quite as it should have.

I only use the one computer for beta testing. It’s the oldest at 10 years and the one I use for everything outside of radio associated software which makes it ideal for beta testing. (I’m using an iPad right now while it installs.)

Tomorrow I’ll take three separately recorded images, so even if it goes south, I’ll soon be back in business.

Not really related but I was one of the lucky people to receive a copy of windows 10 when it went to retail release for free.
They sent some windows 10 playing cards and some tote bags too.

Still got them all somewhere hidden in a box in the attic.
